goin to jump to factory...

hi!

Warning It’s a good idea to run this command in a screen session to avoid zypper dup from getting killed in case e.g. X dies.

’in a screen session

someone kind could clarify a bit?

There is a command named ‘screen’

Another alternative is to use CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to a terminal outside of the GUI. Even if X is restarted, that will continue. Just login there as root and then do “zypper dup”. If X is restarted, you will the GUI pop up in the middle of the updates. Just do CTRL-ALT-F1 again to get back to the same terminal where “zypper dup” will still be running.

I kill graphics before starting (init 3). Safer and perhaps faster.

The caveat might be if network manager is needed…

The process is ‘reversible’? I mean come back to stable?? …if some goes wrong…

Yes… with caveats. The procedure is unsupported.

For instance, if an application or service uses data files or
configuration files with new features not compatible or simply unknown
in the older, stable distro, things break.

For instance, factory uses dracut and wicked.

Reversing involves re-installation

  • Disable all factory repos
  • Enable (may involve re-adding) regular 13.1 oss and update repos
  • Followed by “zypper dup” (not zypper up)

In other words, if you decide to upgrade to “factory” don’t remove your 13.1 repos, just disable them. You can always remove altogether later (although I wouldn’t recommend). Then you won’t have to re-install your 13.1 repos if you need them later.

I will meditate before proceeding …

I assume this means “make backups” right?

I reflected…

I’m going to switch to **Tumbleweed !

**Factory would be suicidal !!!

BTW: best and easy way to do it??? (w/o complications)

I would look into this first. https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/499642-Fwd-opensuse-factory-The-future-of-Tumbleweed

Factory is far from suicide, I am running it right now with nary a crash, but I wouldn’t deploy it on a mission critical machine. Not even due to any real concerns but due to the ever changing nature of it is all. I love it on my home computer.

in that case…I’ll follow u !

:beat-up:

Steady now, be sure to make the decision for yourself. I shouldn’t have chimed in really because I am a bit biased toward the new factory model. Tumbleweed isn’t gone yet.

Aborted!

for now ain’t capable:

anyway couldn’t find **solutions **[1,2,3,]

I don’t know if the zypper dup method is tested or supported yet. Though i’ll test myself if I can get a core system from 13.1->factory.

This problem is caused by the fact that you have libxine2-32bit from Packman installed which cannot be upgraded and requires a lot of old packages from 13.1.
So either uninstall it (you shouldn’t need the -32bit version anyway), or add the Packman repo for Tumbleweed (or change the repo’s URL to point to the Tumbleweed version).

hi!

how to scroll up on tty?

Shift-PgUp. Load screen (if installed) before running other commands to
expand the possibilities.

I was able to zypper dup a basic system to factory just fine. Didn’t test tumbleweed.

It should work fine with Tumbleweed as well. Otherwise nobody would be able to use it…

Tumbleweed is “only” an add-on repo to the latest openSUSE release. You have to start by installing standard openSUSE, add the Tumbleweed repo and zypper dup to it. There is no Tumbleweed “distribution” or installation medium.

If you have (many) additional repos configured, there might be problems though (both in the case of Factory and Tumbleweed).
Either remove them first (and probably the software you installed from them), or add the corresponding repos for Factory/Tumbleweed.
