Gnus v5.13: No access to forums via NNTP since Emacs update

Since the upgrade from Emacs 23.3 to 24.2 I experience problems connecting to forums.opensuse.org or forums.novell.com using Gnus. The messages buffer tells me this:

Connecting to forums.opensuse.org...
Opening nntp server on forums.opensuse.org...failed: Error when connecting: 200 Welcome to forums.novell.com! (Typhoon v2.1.2.394)

This makes no sense to me. So, what do other users of Gnus experience and what is the correct way to configure Gnus?

I’d probably throw a sniffer on the wire and see what the NNTP request/
response conversation is that’s taking place.
