You need to install the media stuff. openSUSE is well open it does not include by default any propritary software. How ever you are free to add what you may need.

after my post, i decided to switch from smplayer2 to vlc. packman had codecs for vlc,and the player.after the install, ivlc will play the mp4 moviethat smplayer2 and gnome gagged on. i think on this laptop vlc is all i 'lneed!i’ll stick with the lxde and enjoywhhat i have.thanks for your reply!heboland
