Gnome3 Online Accounts and GDrive

Gnome3 is supposed to be able to connect to your onlilne account and provides for even searching through your files located online. I never got this to work previously, but I don’t know if that is changed with the more recent versions of Gnome.

If this feature is still in later version of Gnome 3 (and working), does it still work with Google changing from Google Docs to Google Drive? How about the Live/Hotmail accounts, does it connect with SkyDrive?

I would love it if it could! I have been enjoying the seamless Windows/SkyDrive integration but looking for a non-Windows-lock-in solution and so far this is possibly one of the closest.

Yes, I know about Dropbox so don’t even bothering bringing that up. I also know about Ubuntu One and SpiderOak but they all are not the “killer app” for me for different reasons.

So, if anybody has gotten Gnome’s online accounts to successfully allow browsing of online account storage, does it still work with the recent changes to Google and/or Microsoft?

Google says Linux support for Google Drive is forthcoming, so my
expectation is that it doesn’t yet work/isn’t yet supported.

The Google Drive is a Dropbox-like synchronization program and when that does come along for Linux I’ll be happy.

I have it on Windows and it is less useful than I originally thought because I had already taken the time to convert my fiiles and documents to a Google Doc format (since it takes up none of my allotted space). Google Drive shows these “files” as shortcuts that open your browser in the Google Doc (depending on format).

The Online Account included in Gnome 3 includes contacts, files, calendars, etc. and provided a means to look through your files in your Google Docs, like so

What I am wondering is if this is still true, at least until Google finishes the Google Drive.

There was once a means of connecting to a Live/Hotmail account in addition to the Google one and I would love it if it could connect (“mount”) the SkyDrive since I have so much space (plus about 6 GB of pictures!).

Plus, by “mounting” it, or otherwise making it available without synchronizing, it means I don’t have to download / upload a ton of files, or have them taking up disk space (which may be tight since it’s an older, smaller drive).

Last night I tried to connect the Online Account running openSUSE 12.1 Gnome LiveCD and it didn’t connect. I think it has to be installed in order for it to work.

That does seem consistent with what I observed in my attempt as well - I
hadn’t looked at the Google Docs integration in the past, so it was
interesting to see it there. Now with the changes, I couldn’t get it to
work either, so hopefully when the Google app comes out, a fix will be
able to be put in place.

My Gnome 3 and Google Online Accounts work great. I have 2 of them. It looks just like post #3.

Empathy can tie in Hotmail for Chat. However, I am not aware of any means to tie in SkyDrive, but I to would like that.

Microsoft needs to make an API available. You should talk to them about
releasing one.
