Gnome workspaces hijacking windows

The Gnome workspaces are behaving in a way that I’m not used to, and I can’t figured out how to fix it.

Whenever I do something that causes the focus to switch to a window on a different workspace (say, clicking a link in Pidgin while Firefox is in a different space), it just moves that window over to the current workspace, which to me seems in total disregard of the whole idea of workspaces. I’d rather it move over to another workspace and leave my windows where I put them. How can I do this?

Bump? I still haven’t been able to figure this one out.

What happens if you right-click on the window bar and select ‘Only on this workspace’?

It’s already set that way, but they still move.

I turned on compiz desktop effects and this was resolved.

And I turned it off again because it crashes constantly. So the problem still exists.

Have you tried using compiz as a window manager but with all the effects switched off? Hardly a real solution, but better than nothing…
