It is curious to note that when using gnome, I can logout but not directly shutdown, but when using either version of KDE, I can. I did setup linux with a KDE desktop but surely this fact has no relevance although I mention it for completeness. Any ideas why this behaviour is happening?
Normal behavior when setting up KDE and GNOME with KDM as login manager.
The login manager handles these functions but in most cases it can only do this for “it’s own desktop” which is KDE.
Create some customized Icons (in GNOME they are called “starters” IIRC) which run shutdown commands with “sudo” and custominze your /etc/sudoers to allow execution of that commands without password if you don’t want to get prompted for your password or switch to GDM (which will then as a consequence disable this funtion for KDE).

I am experiencing the same problem: have to shutdown by pressing ctrl+alt+f1
or by entering into gnome-terminal and issue “shutdown -h now”.
This strange behavior happened after updating from gnome OBS repo to the
latest release of gnome packages. Most surely is a little bug

Just a few minutes ago i had a Gnome session under KDM with the
ability to restart or shutdown the machine.
Start Yast -> system settings -> edit /etc/sysconfig, expand Display,
then choose ?displaymanger_shutdown? and set to yes.
