gnome-terminal won't open

20181009, running gnome-terminal from xterm just returns to the bash prompt. What gives?

Also this comment works, are users supposed to figure this out by themselves?

Hi
No issues here, fire up xterm, run gnome-terminal and fires up as expected… running Gnome DE…

What desktop environment?

Okay, I think the problem was that running gnome-terminal in a VNC session for some reason ignores $DISPLAY, and pops the terminal on the main machine’s display (:0). “dbus-launch” allows it to pop up in the VNC session. Not sure why gnome ignores $DISPLAY, but then again I’m not sure about gnome in general.
