Gnome-software stopped warning me about updates

Hello everybody.

I wonder if anyone can help me …
Gnome-software stopped warning me about updates …
Furthermore, it is no longer downloading updates …

Post output of “gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.software”

Excuse me! I’m too noob to understand what you’re talking about.
Could you be so kind as to detail what is trying to guide me?

Open a terminal window.

Enter the command “script”. That will create a file named “typescript”.

Then type in the command that arvidjaar suggested:

gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.software

Then

exit

Finally, post the content of the file “typescript”. Use CODE tags to post that. If the file is too large, then upload it to “susepaste.org” and provide the link.

That will list a bunch of Gnome settings, and arvidjaar is experienced in analyzing that.

I hope I did it correctly

Mr. moderator, would you be so kind as to delete the previous post?

This is the contents of the folder that was created. Here she only appeared on Nautilus, after I turned on this machine again.
For me it is the same as the one I posted earlier.

That looks OK. Is gnome-software started on logon? What “ps -ef | grep gnome-software” says?

org.gnome.software check-timestamp int64 1621078954

This is Sat May 15 11:42:34 UTC 2021

org.gnome.software update-notification-timestamp int64 1621012332

So it appears it actually checks and displays notifications. Can you be more specific what does not work?

Hello arvidjaar!
When I wake up, I turn on my laptop and I’m going to do some morning tasks … When I came back about 20 minutes later, I saw a notification from gnome-software, saying I had updates. I closed that notification, opened a terminal window and ran ‘sudo zypper dup’ …
The zypper reported the download size of 0 MB, and that x MB is in cache, since gnome-software had downloaded the updates, and it only needed to be installed.

Now what I reported earlier, doesn’t happen anymore … If I open gnome-software, I see that it has updates, but they need to be downloaded, and I am not notified of them.

lgc@localhost:~> ps -ef | grep gnome-software
lgc 2167 1954 0 06:55 ? 00:00:06 /usr/bin/gnome-software --gapplication-service

The easiest thing for me to always try first? Gnome-software can get kinda quirky for me at times. It often fixes itself if I open Yast Software Mgmt and delete then reinstall it.

I tried to edit, and duplicated …
I don’t know how I did it, sorry.

Thanks!
It’s worth trying.

I almost didn’t reinstall gnome-software … Ram usage has decreased considerably.

Yes, gnome-software was changed to only download updates immediately if there was update marked as “security” or more than 14 days has passed since last notification. And it only notifies about availability of downloaded updates. As in Tumbleweed there are no “security updates” - everything is just regular update - you get notifications each two weeks.

See Review timing and content of software updates notifications (#947) · Issues · GNOME / gnome-software · GitLab

Everything is hard-coded, there is no way to change frequency or to display notifications immediately.

Thanks for clarifying, arvidjaar!
I was believing that there was something wrong.

Arvidjaar, I have to thank you for another point. I loved gnome 40, and it’s not about that … But linux means freedom, and determining when to update, it is too much … I prefer to uninstall gnome-software, which is of no use to me just consumes my resources.

I re-enabled gnome-software autostart and left it do whatever it wants to do. Today I was notified about available updates. Notification was actually incorrect - it told me “updates are downloaded and ready to be installed” while in reality nothing has been downloaded, because I disabled automatic download - but at least this confirms that notifications work.

Graphical software update notifications are pretty obtrusive, in my opinion of course. I turned them off and enabled packagekit-background.service

**erlangen:~ #** systemctl status packagekit-background.service

May 26 05:50:31 erlangen systemd[1]: packagekit-background.service: Succeeded.
**erlangen:~ #**

It consumes few resources only, works reliably and sends mail whenever updates are pending:

I’m confused … I don’t get notifications about updates.
I really like Gnome, especially when gnome-software, notifies you of updates after automatically downloading them.
How can I enable notification of updates, and automatic downloads?
It is possible?
