I would like to install opensuse 11.2 on my children’s new pc with nvidia 7025 graphic onboard card. which desktop environment is better between kde or gnome? I haven’t a preference yet but I wolud like to install a light graphic system that can be used by a child of 5 yo.
thanks
IMO there is little difference from a point and click stand point. The main differences are in how things are configured and you probably want to lock it down for a 5 year old.
You might consider Sugar as a desktop. It is the environment made for the XO (one laptop per child project). It is designed for younger people.
Note these instructions are for an older version of Suse
KDE has a fair bit of educational and children’s software written specifically for it.
ok thanks that’s very nice.
but it’s possible to install both sugar and another desktop env one for my child and one for me? in this case which one? kde or gnome ? the best for the chip 7025 that’s its a ugly chip. I mean : I installed kde (ubuntu) in an old hd3650 and kde isnt so performance and meny problem with driver… I hope not to have that problem so I’like to use kde but without problem…
Why don’t you install Gnome and KDE, and see what works best for you? There are no restrictions on the number of DEs on your system.
Maybe your children have difference preferences. Let them choose.
so I try to install both kde and gnome for me than i decide later. no problem to install both, sure? no slow system if there are more then one de.?
No, because you only log into one at a time.
other thing: which software is possibile to use with graphic pen, such as painter i mean, in linux?
just a little better than tux paint, that I already know…

My children grow up in a linux environment. Currently they have the choice to run KDE3, KDE4, Gnome and XFCE. They tend to use KDE4 mostly, but the other DE’s are being used as well.
May I draw some attention to the wonderful GCompris project. Gcompris can be installed from the repos.
sorry for the new tread…:shame:
Hi Knurpht,
I recently installed a fresh opensuse 11.3x86-64 with KDE. I installed gcompris and gcompris-en for my daugher but cannot seem to get sound to work for it. Sound works fine for other apps though. Have you installed gcompris on opensuse11.3 x86-64?
Thanks,
Nick
