try this:
-hold down Alt and press F2
-in resultant run popup, type and enter
gnomesu nautilus
-it should ask for your root pass and you are off…
(well, it should ask, because i do hope you have NOT logged into
Gnome as the root user)
note: if you come from another distro (i think this is an openSUSE
specific thing) you also need to know the special recipe in KDE would
be “kdesu [something]”…(i forget the reason, has something to do
with attaching windows or something geeky)

not sure (haven’t used Gnome in a long while), but i think if you
open nautilus (or any ‘core’ parts of gnome) and go Help > About the
version of nautilus and gnome itself are the same…(i know that works
in KDE with (say) KWrite, etc)
