GNOME issues on 13.1...

I installed openSUSE 13.1 with GNOME on a test PC I had, and I indeed came with a couple of issues, as warned before…

  1. Opening Nautilus as root using Alt+F2 and typing “gnomesu nautilus” doesn’t work anymore, does nothing.
  2. Installed multimedia codecs using mr Caf’s guide (I installed opus-tools before anything to avoid surprises). Every video I have runs like slow motion, even flash player videos on Youtube!
  3. Application menu takes like 40 seconds to open!
  4. Same issue as 12.3 with GNOME, when opening gedit as root using Alt+F2 and gnomesu, let’s say to create a udev rule, if I open application menu while gedit still open, entire GUI crash. I have to go to console with Ctrl+Alt+F1, kill processes and reboot.
  5. I got a similar entire system crash like I had in the past, except that I was testing some videos.

And who knows what other issues it may have. Clean-installed again, but this time with KDE. The issues were not found here indeed.

Is it just me or GNOME is really not fixing pendant issues? And even it’s probably just getting heavier… Or could it be some integration failure of its own with openSUSE?

Not really seeing these issues where I have installed gnome.

I think opus-tools is now available normally and is not related to your issues.

I have found the 1st instance of displaying the menu from the Hot spot or using the Super key, is slightly delayed…a few seconds.

Graphics is fine, either with the out of the box driver or with the nVidia driver.

What are the specs of the test system, cpu, gpu ram etc…

I have openSUSE 13.1 GNOME on two systems a HP ProBook 4525s (radeon,
AMD 2.2GHz cpu, 6GB ram)) and a HP 2000 (ATI proprietary, 1.7GHz cpu,
8GB ram). I don’t see the issues you describe, in the two examples
given, no crashes or issues…

I have codecs installed (no packman though) videos, flash etc play fine.

You’re having an nvidia card and are using the proprietary driver, right?
Then you should add your user to the “video” group. This should resolve your video issues.
The bug that you don’t have sufficient rights for direct rendering otherwise, reappeared in 13.1 unfortunately (apparently they added the wrong patch to the systemd package).

As I first stated, I didn’t test on my rig, but on another one: Acer Aspire 3680, but slightly modified with 2 gb ram ddr2, hdd 640 gb, and a core 2 duo t2300.
The first instance of opening the menu took 45 sec, the others took circa 25 sec.
But on KDE all the opposite: no issues, stable and even generally faster than previous KDE releases.
So it’s a GNOME problem at least with that laptop… why only with that one?

Though I don’t think I’d necessarily encounter the same issues on my rig, I’m kind of worried… I thought the video user bug was gone regarding Nvidia, but it turned out it didn’t…

Works fine here. Try running the command from a terminal window and see
what the output is.

Sounds like a video issue, what controller and driver are you using?

What steps can one follow to duplicate? I just use the activities or
shortcuts on the dash usually, or launch apps from a terminal, so I am
not sure how to reproduce this.

Make sure you’ve updated to the 3.10.2 stack. There were a lot of things
that fixed.

It may just be you. The initial GNOME packages did have problems, but as
I said above, the 3.10.2 stack seems to have fixed a lot of them.

The updates are in the update channel, so just a ‘zypper up’ should do it.

Well, you stated you installed it on a test system, but that doesn’t imply it has no nvidia card… :wink:

Systemd was patched to grant the user access to the nvidia card with an online update for 12.3.
But apparently the wrong patch (which doesn’t work reliably) was added to the Factory package and ended up in 13.1.

YaST->Online Update, “sudo zypper up” or your Desktop’s update applet.
The 3.10.2 GNOME update is in the standard update repo…
