Gnome Immutable?

Is openSUSE considering a Gnome alternative to Kalpa?

I know there is Aeon, but I was told very clearly that Aeon is independent and scolded for asking a question about it in this forum.

openSUSE is a great community and people are friendly. Tumbleweed is a great distro, but love gnome and immutibility.

FWIW, there is absolutely no problem asking about Aeon over here (heck, we have a tag for it) - but you may find there isn’t a lot of folks with experience with it here.

It is the only immutable GNOME variant in aware of, but I haven’t really looked much, as I don’t have a need.

Both, Aeon and Kalpa, have seperate and independent project websites. Aeon additionally decided not to use the openSUSE main forum for support. They have their own channels. Thus the „traffic“ here in the openSUSE forum might be low in the Aeon section.

I said the same, but was informed by the “Creator of Aeon” that this is an old tag, and abruptly told that questions should not be asked here. Let’s just say that I wasn’t being recommended for better support, I was being ‘told’.

I didn’t dare ask when will the first official stable version be released.

Well, as you’ve said that Aeon questions are welcome here, I will just use these friendly friendly forums.

Thanks for the replies.

Although what I am about to say is not the same as having an immutable variant, it is currently possible to achieve atomic updates in Tumbleweed (in addition to using flatpaks to avoid modifying the system base).

It is possible to update using transactional-update, which even allows you to configure services to update in the background. The downside is that for automatic updates, you will need to configure systemd services. I have been using it for months and have had no problems (but note that it is not the default tool, so…).

I also saw that there is a developer wanting to create another tool. But I have never tested it:

Aeon and Kalpa are both semi-independent of openSUSE, for many reasons. Aeon somewhat more than Kalpa.

That being said, there’s nothing stopping a person from creating other immutable and/or atomic products, and promoting them as “openSUSE $whatever” if they have the interest in putting the work in to do so.

At the moment, it doesn’t appear that the interest exists.

Which is how this project works, there’s no “planning committee” that hands out assignments and decides what “products” are going to be created.

@charlie-uk I run Aeon on a test system, likewise I have MicroOS with Hyprland, which is not supported in any way, but it works fine
