Since yesterdays updates od openSuse 11 ppc, when i log in, i get the error message The panel encountered a problem while loading “OAFIID:GNOME_MainMenu” with the choice to “Delete” or “Chancel”. If i delete and try to add the panel manually the same happens.
Tried to reinstall several parts of Gnome without success.
Suggestions anyone?
I did stumble over several posts about this on the web, but none of the suggesetions worked for me as long and they have been rather old. What triggers that problem?
It seems some update in the last few days have triggered the same problem for me. I’m running x86_64 version. The Main Menu and Clock applets are not working, but e.g. System Monitor and Window Lists applets work as they should.
Hmmm seems as long as you are not on Linux x86_32 you have a seat in the back row.
I have the same problem on PPC

I got my applets to work by setting the panel (in Sessions) to not restart, and killing and restarting gnome-panel in a terminal. After that, it worked as it should. Have no idea why.
I have the same problem and I resolved by the package downgrade of rpm hal-0.5.11-8.2 to hal-0.5.11-8.1

I have encountered the identical problem that you raised here in the Fedora10.
And this problem is resolved after I delete all configuration files (which are created in openSUSE) pertaining to desktop setting
Could you explain in more detail how you did this? I didn’t see any options in the Sessions menu (when you restart or log in) for setting the panel not to restart. Also, what, exactly, do you type in a Terminal to get the gnome-panel to stop and restart? Thanks.
Has anyone figured out how to solve this yet? I’ve tried killing and restarting the gnome main menu and it didn’t work. I don’t get a startup error anymore, but I also can’t put back the gnome-main-menu without getting an error message. There was apparently a bug filed on it, but the person who filed the report got it to work and the bug report has been marked solved.
FYI, I’m running 11.0 on PPC (PowerBook G4).
Still suffering from that problem. There seem to be several solutions it seems. None of them explained in detail, so i cannot reproduce them. I need help please.
same problem here. running openSUSE 11 on a PPC G3. had been working fine and when i started it up yesterday, i had the same error as everyone has listed.
no problems if i’m in KDE 3.
can anyone help…please?

My computers is experiencing the same type of error on bootup. Recently installed 11.0 x86_64 with the gnome desk top. The install ran fine for several weeks. Next I tryed installing vmware to create an windows environment for autocad, but unable get to the gui booting with xen. I set that problem aside to work on codec for totem from webpin site, and the problem seem to follow the next boot up. The error message is “Panel encountered a problem while loading OAFIID: Gnome_MixerApplet” Included with the message is a button to delete the panel. I did not delete the panel, however sound" icon no longer is visible at bottom of the desktop. Still able to play music and watch dvd’s by adjusting volume within those applications.
Problem persists with all updates. Yesterday added a new user… and guess… yes when login them in to Gnome the same error.
So its not about the user account.
Any news about this? Its really annoying as the new menu is much better than the classic Gnome menu.
Hey everyone, I don’t use opensuse any more, but I ran into the same error after upgrading gnome on my system. I love the “slab”, and so I thought I’d at least let you know that sources for gnome-main-menu posted towards the end of May, 2009 have allowed me to build a functional slab once again.
In case it matters, this was done by way of the Archlinux AUR system. Of course that doesn’t mean that the person who posted the package-build to AUR didn’t apply any patches, but at least there is a solution for anyone willing to research a bit and rebuild the sources into an rpm for the rest of the community.
