Hi,
i think this could be a problem with older gnome configuration files. so i guess you can try the following:
go and logon as root by using tty1 or something (press <strg>-<alt>-f1) and save your needed data like hidden e-mail folders, documents and stuff to an other place on your harddisk or even better on an other harddisk.
if you than remove the contend in the directory like this:
rm -r /home/YourUser/*
note the star! You should be able to login as normal user. if this is not the case, try running gnome login you can go to runlevel 3 and running gnome manualy and post the errors here.
thanks for your answer
how to run GNOMME manualy?
If I go to the root and I write GNOME and than enter the answer is: cannot open display
you need to switch to an other runlevel like this:
init 3
than you may login as normal user and i am not quiet sure what the command is. with kde it is startkde, so i think it could be
startgnome >> gnome-error.log
you may also try
gnome-session >> gnome-error.log
but i am not sure. when it fails to login it might display the reason in the file gnome-error.log which you can post here.
could you please also post the output of the following:
zypper se -s -d -i gnome
here?
just answered the same question posted in german…

i would NOT follow this advice!!!
if i were to consider it i would RENAME home and not DELETE home…
but, i wouldn’t even do that because i think it highly unlikely that
will solve this problem…
if old gnome config files is the problem it would be MUCH simpler and
safer to just rename /home/[userID]/.gnome

i am telling him to save his files to an other place so this is pretty much renaming and the directory /home/YourUser says intact.
cool didnt know its just startx thx

but he says he is a newbee, and you didn’t tell him how or to save
to another place…
but, wouldn’t it just be a lot easier to NOT have to copy all of the
home stuff, and take the chance of loosing some (or all of it) when it
is really easy to just rename the hidden .gnome to test your theory
and, that rename operations takes about one second or less…now, you
get your stop watch and copy your entire /home to a different hard
disk and let me know if that can be done in one second…

@DenverD: ok i think just moving the .gnome directory won’t work because there are other files too which are needed at gnome startup.

i didn’t say move, i said rename…if just .gnome is not enough to
test your theory then rename /home/[original] to /home/original.bak
but lets not bicker…instead lets hope he figured out how to “save
your needed data like hidden e-mail folders, documents and stuff” and
then actually did so before he blew away his /home folder…
if he didn’t, well . . .
