After restarting things have normalized. But the original problem of the Desktop ‘transparent space around icons’ still remains. Could you suggest some solution to that?

Alas I don’t, it’s likely you need to tweak a js file somewhere, else have a look and see if there is an extension to do what your wanting to do https://extensions.gnome.org

I shall look forward to your suggestions whenever you come up with them.
Meanwhile, some more things went wrong when we reverted to normalization.
- When something is downloaded from the net I cannot save it in the folder of my choice because in the list displayed no folder can be opened.
- If I suspend the computer by closing the lid then on return, application icons on the bottom panel go. To get the icons back it has to be restarted.
You may like to suggest a solution to these issues.

If you create a test user, does the issue duplicate? If not, then likely in your user folder .config or .cache directories.

I created a test user but there it was free from this obstruction in saving to a folder of my choice. So should I remove .config or .cache directories?
The other problem is that the application ‘software’ keeps coming up at every reboot with a notification ‘software update is unsuccessful’. How to keep it quiet?

I had right-clicked the ‘home’ folder on the Desktop and in the ‘properties’ tab had set the ‘permissions’ as under:
Owner Me
Access Create and delete files
Group Users
Access Create and delete files
Others List files only
There is a tab at the bottom of the 'Permissions' Tab names as below. On clicking it another window opens which has been adjusted as give below the heading:
**Change Permissions For Enclosed Files
**
Files Folders
Owner Read and write Create and delete files
Group Read only Access files
Others Read only Access files
Besides this, the only other tweak was the Gnome Extensions.

OK, so log out of the desktop, then switch to a tty and log in as root user and cd to the user home directory and run;
mv .cache cache_backup
ll cache_backup {should still be owned by your user and group users}
exit
Then switch back to the login screen ctrl+alt+F2 (or F7 or F8) and login as your user, if it turns pear shaped, then just redo the above except reverse the mv command.

I could not reply to the thread earlier because I decided to re-install Leap 15.2. I did it this morning and it is working OK so far. So this problem of saving in the folder of my choice is overcome. But the problem that we started with i.e. ‘transparent space around Desktop icons’ continues even now. I think this might have been intended in this Leap version so that the icons stay apart and properly lined up on the Desktop. It does not really bother in the working though.
