Am trying to use Gnome Commander in 13.1/x64/KDE 4.11.4 and would like to be able to browse the network. I know, it’s a Gnome app,but I think it looks more ‘capable’ than the default Nautilus…
When trying to browse the network, get the message “Failed to browse the network. Is the SMB module installed?”
Googling this returns the need for the libgnomevfs2-extra package, at least in Ubuntu, but can’t really find any trace of this for opensuse.
Anyone know the answer?

Nautilus is a GNOME app as well.
For KDE there is dolphin, konqueror and krusader. Ever tried one of those? 
(especially krusader looks very similar to Gnome Commander anyway: http://www.krusader.org/. It’s available in the standard openSUSE repos, so just install it with YaST or zypper)

I think the main problem here is that this is old GNOME2 stuff.
I can’t find any smb-enabled gnome-vfs2 package for openSUSE 13.1 unfortunately.
You might want to file a bug report about the missing smb support in gnome-vfs2:

Have tried krusader - just doesn’t seem to ‘work very well’… Seems pretty klunky or something…??
Commander seems to work OK, although still has a number of glitches (can’t seem to figure out how to automatically open removable drives, etc.)

Don’t know anything about Gnome Commander as well, except that it uses GNOME/GTK 2 and gnome-vfs2 therefore.
The openSUSE package (gnome-vfs2) is actually built with smb support, but AFAICS it only supports Samba 3 and openSUSE 13.1 ships with Samba 4.
Well, as I said, this is old stuff…
And this may also cause problems with automatic device mounting of course.
If it requires HAL for that and doesn’t support udisks yet (I don’t know, have to check), you’re out of luck there.

Try to install the “gnome-vfs2” package from here:

This package has SMB support enabled, so it should work.
I’ll try to push this out as update for 13.1, but we need a bugreport first…

Regarding monting: it does indeed look like it need HAL for that.
But you should be able to mount your drives with KDE’s device notifier (just click on the small “connector” symbol next to the device) and you should be able to open it in Gnome Commander (you may have to navigate to the folder /var/run/media/$USER/).

I do quite like Dolphin, but one of the things (and there aren’t many others…) that I like about Windows, is that there are a couple of ‘all inclusive’ dual pane file managers (eg: http://multicommander.com/), and once you have used one, a normal file manager feels restricted.
Well, dolphin has a dual pane mode as well.
Just click on that icon with a ‘+’ in the toolbar:
