Gnome and XFCE Desktops Freeze/Hang When Launching Anything

Thanks for reviewing my issue - this issue could have been created in a couple of different forums, but I choose to start here. Please move to more appropriate forum if necessary, but this issue started right after installation.

I have installed 12.2 64-bit on an Intel Dual Core 2.4GHz system with 4GB RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 430 GT video card. Installation seemed to go OK with no errors. I installed with Gnome as the default desktop and also with XFCE. The first login with the default Nouveau driver, I noticed a lag or freeze when opening any application or window. The application or window seems to freeze for 20 seconds and then finally responds. This happens with anything - a terminal window, Firefox, or just browsing the home directory.

Most often when logging into Gnome - I get an error message that a system error has occurred, extensions have been closed, and log out is the only option. When I log out and back into Gnome again, the dekstop appears, but I get the window freeze issues.

I rebooted and tried logging into XFCE and get the same window freeze issues, minus the “system error has occured” message when trying to log into a Gnome session.

I have installed through Yast the proprietary NVIDIA drivers, but the issue still occurs. I have tried launching the Gnome system monitor to see what is going on, but that window doesn’t even respond properly, until after the 20 seconds of freezing up. This window lag also occured with the Nouveau driver. So, I don’t think this is a video card or driver issue - but could be wrong.

I haven’t seen this issue before and I have searched the forums for similar issues, but to no avail. I am not even certain what logs to take a look at to begin in resolving the issue. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Try using top in a console window

open console type
top
generally it is better then a gui monitor because it is text based. It might show what is eating the CPU cycles

Thanks for the information. Opened a terminal window, waited 20+ seconds for the system to respond, dragged the window to my second monitor, and ran top. Then launched firefox, the entry then appeared on top, while firefox was “frozen”, then the entry disappeared from top. Firefox finally responded, and reappeared on top. There where no other unusal processes running, CPU utiliation never exceeded 17%, after firefox responded CPU utiliation dropped to 2.3%. All seemed normal. But any newly launched application or window hangs, even if I open, for example, firefox - wait for it to respond, close and reopen, it still hangs.

For whatever reason, I decided to wipe the disk and install 12.2 32-bit. Same issues. Currently installing Windows 7 just to see how that OS responds and checking for hadware issues, but I don’t think thta is the case.

Anyhow, any thoughts, ideas, or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hey there! Any ideas yet as to what could be causing these ‘Hangs’? I too am experiencing the same issues with the same setup.
