I did not feel confident deinstaling or breaking, and the “patterns-openSUSE-kde4_pure-11.3-1.1.1.i586” gave me pause (since I have been reading about 11.3).

I checked :

zypper lr -d

and was presented

Should I do the deinstallation or break to install Gnome ? More importantly, do I have something from 11.3 ?

Try disabling 6.

] deinstallation of patterns-openSUSE-kde4_pure-11.3-1.1.1.i586

Is just fine

I’m absolutely certain because I have done it myself on 3 computers recently

Resolved and installed. My thanks.

Great.
Are we to assume you did as I said?

deinstallation of patterns-openSUSE-kde4_pure-11.3-1.1.1.i586

Yes (apologies for not including earlier). Gnome installed easily once that bit was sorted.

The KDE desktop had experienced a few hiccups during or after running Gnome based programs, especially “GSynaptics”. Perhaps the Gnome install sorted that bit also.
