A well themed and customized fallback mode can look and behave pretty much like Gnome2. Otherwise, in Gnome-shell, I would say maybe the apps-menu extension. But you won’t have the submenus we already discussed (a while ago) in another thread. However all menu entries will be available … but collapsed… until someone rewrites this extension in a way that it can display the submenus. You can have submenus in fallback mode if you write your own menu file (so do I).
The picture show the difference between Gnome-Shell (right) and fallback (left) using the same menus. It was taken in Fedora, but my openSUSE looks and behaves the same - except for the color and background image.

Do not know if it were already described in the ‘parent’ thread but there is a small how-to/description with screen-shots if someone wants to turn on/force the 2D fallback mode for Gnome3 in System Settings > System Info > Graphics: “Forced Fallback Mode” [ON] [Logout and login again]

But I personally like the new menu structure and using the search via name more than the hightly branced old stucture. And I use the GnomeTweakTool and will try to customize my GNOME3 a bit more with some (more) Gnome shell extensions (preferably from the openSUSE repositories).
Also there seem to be test packages of Mint’s GNOME fork “Cinnamon” to install and test this new old-style desktop environment on openSUSE 12.1 :

But in my personal view it makes more sense just to use a light environment like LXDE parallel to GNOME3.
