I have installed openSUSE 12.1 on an older machine with a GeForce FX5200 graphics card, problem is the top menu bar is garbled. Any ideas of a fix for this or do I need to dump Gnome and install Xfce or some alternative desktop instead.

first, if you want help you need to be patient enough to wait for
someone answer and try to help you… (remember, this is not a real time
[chat like] service…and, it could be that all the Gnome gurus are on
the side of the earth now totally dark, and quiet!)
the way it is now you asked for help with a scrambled top menu bar and
35 minutes later anyone who tries to answer your question finds that you
don’t even have gnome still…
sorry, but i can’t help you with gnome (installed or not) but i can
suggest that instead of uninstalling Gnome and installing Xfce i think
it easiest, and best to just use YaST to install Xfce, and then log out
of the current session, and on the resulting log in page, click on the
“Sessions” (at the bottom left) and then choose Xfce for the new session…
[then, if in some future need you want to go back to Gnome you will need
to again visit the Sessions page and pick it]
of course, if you have actually removed Gnome already i wonder the state
of your system…
Yep, Xfce now installed and working thanks. Will wait for a while to see if anyone comes up with a solution to the Gnome menu bar problem. However if that is not solvable it would be good to be able to uninstall Gnome completely and just have Xfce only installed.
Removing Gnome is the bit that at the moment I cannot see how to do, there are lots of Gnome components but no remove all Gnome-desktop that I can find. Is there any way to get to the Software selection screen that was used during install time, that seemed to have things grouped together as packages.

open YaST Software Management…across the top (of mine) i see a row of tabs
-select “Patterns”
-scroll to Graphical Environments
-uncheck GNOME Desktop Environment & GNOME Base System
-click “Accept” button…
i’ve never done that, but i guess it will scream bloody murder about
stuff you are gonna break if you do that…
i can’t help you with those choices, if they are presented…
you will need to get help with that from someone else…and, you may
need to start a new thread, with a new subject…one that actually
reflects your problem…
OTOH, if after you click Accept it just whirrs and blinks, i guess GNOME
will be history on your machine…
OH: if you wish to try fixing the GNOME problem – you should take a
screen shot of the ‘scrambled’ top bar and post it here…oh2, have you
installed the nvidia driver, that may be all yo need to do—but, i
guess this is gonna be a runlevel 3 server, eventually?? if so, XFCE is
MORE than you need…
finally: again, i’ll say that i would just leave GNOME there…why?
well, when you click ‘Accept’ i think you will see why…and, if it is
not being used it only ‘costs’ hard drive space, and not very much of
that (by todays standards)
