Gnome 3 - just shoot me NOW- rant

man i am starting to ** REALLY DISLIKE** Gnome 3

well i skipped 12.0 and just upgraded ( new install of 12.1 from 11.4 )
– i have NEVER liked kde4 , i do like the qt apps but not the desktop.

None of the terminals will open gedit to the folder that bash has been cd’ed to
i have to navagate to that folder , and what is this **** with " recently used"
this IN NOT microsoft

i just WANT the editor to open in the folder that the terminal IS IN !!!

then the time ( clock ) just randomly RESETS it;s self to 24 hr from the 12 hr + min + sec AND with the date
all that just disappears and is " magically replaced " with the 24 hr time ONLY !!!

nautilus where to start ???
windows ONLY some times open to the CORRECT size
it seams that it randpomally opens to near full secrrn that i set it as
and tinny about 1/4 of the screen ??? - i will end up pulling out the rest of my hair
it is just a royal pain in the ass !!!

there it goes again —
the time just reset WHILE i am typing this - it is 24 hr AGAIN!!!

– well KDE is blacklisted
NOW Gnome3 is going to have to be blacklisted
cinnamon is ??? not all there yet

xfce maybe ???

I feel that this post should be in the soapbox. Please hold replies until I have moved this thread.

Thank You,

This thread is now open for business. Thank for your patience in this matter.

Thank You,

Let me say that first there was no openSUSE 12.0, and we went straight to 12.1 from 11.4. For a listing of past and present versions, please consult this wiki: openSUSE - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As for Gnome 3, I would be inclined to agree with you, but that is because I use KDE and always have. I have not found GNOME 3 to be so bad however since I must use it in order to provide help to others. XFCE is of course another choice for you, but KDE and GNOME, in my opinion, will get the most attention and in general, if they are not up to your standards, you will most certainly be SOL using openSUSE. If XFCE does not work out another distro might be your best choice. Right now, I would point you to the new LinuXMint 13 (New features in Linux Mint 13 - Linux Mint) it sports Mate (a fork of Gnome) and Cinnamon. Neither in my opinion will be able to displace KDE, but actually I hope Mate makes a good run. One thing is for sure, I hope that everyone finds a distribution they they like and can support and good luck to you in your endeavors to find such a match.

Thank You,

After this statement I would be inclined to disregard your post - because
there has not been any 12.0 openSUSE. Never. After 11.4 the next is 12.1.

Yes, try it.

Yikes! :frowning:

And you say this in the new thread, so that I did not see it and posted in
the old thread, which will create a new thread, which you will have now to
remove.

i loged out and got my time back
and JUST now it change BACK to 24 hr from the 12 hr with the min and sec

for NO reason it JUST changes form 12 am/pm to 24 hr

Don’t engage in personal attacks, please. Consider this your warning.

It’s fine to rant in the soapbox, but it gets personal, that’s not allowed.

See the link in my sig for the T&Cs for the forums.

Thanks.

He probably said it in the old thread before it was moved.

The old thread has now been deleted.

Dunno, but the old thread via nntp has no warning, which is why I posted there.

Thanks.
Are you sure it is deleted? I still can see it via web :-?

I merged it in with the rest of the thread here on the soapbox.

And I deleted the NNTP messages from the “looking for” forum. So yeah,
I’m sure.

My sympathy.

When I initially tried Gnome 3, it was hate at first sight. Fortunately, I don’t have any objections to KDE. Also XFCE reminds me of the old Gnome. And if you force Gnome 3 to fallback mode, it becomes close to usable.

but before getting to this thread (in soapbox) i found a message of
yours still in “looking for”

which was both orphaned and confusing, so i clicked on the link provided
in that post “View this thread:
http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php?t=475643

which brought me to an even more confusing “No Thread specified. If you
followed a valid link, please notify the administrator” which i then
tried to reply to but could not because the offered web contact page
failed to display the required image verification link, see:

Let’s get first get this back on-topic:

  • Like others said: you skipped nothing.
  • I’m not going to shoot you.
  • If you want help or changes, ask.

Hate at first sight is a pretty common human reflex. But do you see a difference between these two desktops? They both look pretty usable to me.

Aha, NOW it has disappeared, it was still there when I tried earlier.

It is still in my nntp cache, of course. I mark then in another colour to
avoid them.

But by answering there via nntp you again created the thread there via
http, and will have to be manually deleted - again >:-)

maybe, but one has to either be clairvoyant or brilliant to know
that…and, i’m neither…

anyway, the manual deletion could have been avoided, i guess…

Yes, as I said, I moved it and didn’t leave a redirect. My bad, 50
lashes with a wet noodle for the inconvenience to the NNTP users. <sigh>
