GIMP just as good as Photoshop?

I think it is! xD

Compared to Photoshop GIMP seems to do exactly the same job and it saves you about a dozen hundred quid.

If you don’t mind and if you have made something in GIMP can you post it here for us to see your creativity.

Thanks!

Krita has come a long way too. Might be “better” in certain
cases.

Its a shame, I can’t seem to find any video editing software that works for me… :frowning:

Does GIMP allow for arbitrary rotation? I had trouble finding that a while ago, which is a significant limitation!

Krita is good too. It has come a long way.

Currently, though, I am in the process of testing Xara Xtreme which is more like Inkscape than Gimp.

DV Editing? Kino, Pitiviti and KDEnlive don’t work?

I’m sad to say this… but No!!! Gimp is not as good as Photoshop!

It’s getting there, however!!! It gets the job done with some extra steps, it’s a fact, but it’s not as good.

anyway it’s definitely one of the best (if not the best of all) free alternatives and i use it everyday in my job.

As to video edition i may give you a few links:

Avidemux - Main Page

DVDStyler - Home

Linux Digital Video -

LiVES Video Editing System - Because the media should be open

However, as far as i know, the best ones (specially if you are searching for something like Adobe’s Premiere) the best ones are

Kdenlive - Open Source Video For Linux

or (even better, i think…)

Heroine Virtual: Cinelerra

you can also get a few lists here:

Comparison of video editing software - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Free Video Editing Software: Create & Edit Movies For Free - Digital Inspiration

Free video editing software list for all platforms.

well… i guess i already gave you a lot to search about… (i think the best is Cinelerra!)

I think that GIMP is good but it needs practising.

Hey thanks for all the links and recommendations guys!

I tried out the krita package and its really good! I like it!

Is the GIMP as good as Photoshop? Hmm… Ya know if there is one good justification for keeping a Windows partition around Photoshop may be it. The GIMP is good enough for about 90% of my needs, and hopefully in the future that 10% will shrink significantly.

I’m a huge fan of GIMP, but one of the shortcomings is that it currently
only handles 8-bit-per-colour files. If you want to do work with more
than that, you have to use something else (so I understand).

For most peoples’ use, though, it works great - like I said, huge fan
here, and pretty heavy user of it as well.

Yep I agree, as long as you are not doing painting as great as M. Angelo then gimp is coming to be a great tool. At work I opted not to have photoshop on my machine and instead use gimp for retouching some rendering jobs. Nobody beats a free one.
