Gimp in openSUSE is a mess

So I just opened Gimp and it’s a mess. The toolbar and layer menu are completely focused wrong. When I minimise Gimp, the toolbars stay in place. When I maximise Gimp, one of the toolbars ends up behind the main window. If I adjust the toolbar’s settings to stay on top, then it stays on top of every other application and not just Gimp’s main window.

Either I’m doing something wrong, or this is not desirable behaviour.

Any tips?

until GIMP 2.8 will be released some time this year, you can only work
around these problems – or compile the development version, 2.7, as i’m
doing. (but that’s quite a bit of hassle.)

workaround for the misbehaving toolbars is to hide them before minimizing
GIMP, by hitting <tab> (if necessary twice; sometimes once doesn’t do it,
depending on where your focus is). with the toolbars hidden, they don’t
float around everywhere.

GIMP 2.8 (as well as 2.7) comes with a single window mode, which doesn’t
have these problems.

which is a giant step backwards! which is to say: multiple windows gives
the ‘artist’ so much more flexibility in use of screen space…

instead of making it easier to program (in one window) they should fix
the problems…

well, i guess if Photoshop uses one window, full screen everything
allways on top, then that must be best, right!

the downfall of GIMP will be when the programmers get to decide how
the program works…sigh.

hold on, i didn’t say the new GIMP had only single window; it has both.
you can choose, and i don’t see how this can be bad.

i thought like you, that i liked the multiple window mode just fine, but
eventually i find myself using single window mode more, because it’s just
easier / faster to deal with a bunch of (small) images.

if you followed the GIMP dev. mailing list, you’d know that you’re not
talking sense here. there aren’t very many GIMP developers, unfortunately,
and one of them is peter sikking, a UI expert. there goes a lot of thought
into every design decision in GIMP, and according to me, they are on the
right way.

one thing GIMP does NOT want to be, or try to be, is a photoshop clone –
even though many assume so.

with GIMP, it’s only the developers who decide what’s happening – after
listening to users, but the decision making process is pretty authocratic.

GREAT!! the choice is very very good!

no (sigh) i have not…not enough hours in the day, already!

i see that now, thank you for the informed position!

sounds that way to me, now…also…
as long as they don’t become clone makers, it will be good!—i love
GIMP, it is the best thing i’ve come across since Corel Draw…better
even since GIMP uses standard file formats while Corel Draw liked to
‘improve’ their file formats so you had to buy never versions (à la M$)…

yes, it’s difficult to decide; one can’t follow everything, obviously, but
i find that following some mailing lists / forums, even if it’s as a
‘lurker’ mostly, that saves me lots of time researching problems when they
occur – because they happened to others already.

you’re welcome, and sorry if i sounded a bit harsh in my reply. felt it
was necessary to ‘defend’ the GIMP dev’s decisions, because they have to
deal with a lot of criticism on many points, like, “…why don’t you do
this like PS,” and the whole single / multiple window issue produced a lot
of heated arguments, too.

thinking that i couldn’t live without photoshop kept me from switching to
linux for a long time – until i really got into GIMP, and now, even if PS
ran on linux, i would still use GIMP. there’s a few things, like it can’t
save in > 8 bit color depth yet, but that’s mostly for high resolution
printing, which i don’t do. and that’s the next thing planned, after
releasing 2.8.

I agree with the op that gimp is a mess, but is it really only in opensuse?

But corel draw worked with objects, not bitmaps, so they needed their own
format. The gimp also has its own format, although not proprietary.
