Gimagereader failed to initialise tesseract

On trying to read a German text image (jpeg) with gimagereader the error “Failed to initialise tesseract” appears immediately.

Installed versions:
gimagereader 3.3.1+git20200703.c53b537-lp152.2.1
tesseract 2018_02_01-bp155.3.17

Are they compatible? Is there an alternative OCR package to gimagereader/tesseract?

Who can help here?

I have now discovered to my surprise that this app called tesseract is a game and has nothing to do with the OCR app. It is, however, confusingly, in the OpenSuse:Leap:15.5 repository. I installed it erroneously (what foolishness!!) after the above-mentioned error had appeared thinking that the error had originated from an incomplete tesseract installation, but have now deleted it from my installation.

My actually installed tesseract-ocr version is:

This tesseract-ocr version seems to be incompatible with the installed/available version of gimagereader, leading to the error message of my original post.

@hnimmo depends where gimagereader came from, you need to check that repository… I’m not using Leap, maybe @oldcpu does as I know they use it…

It comes from
obs://build.opensuse.org/home:malcolmlewis

However, YasT show it in red letters

@hnimmo I don’t publish anymore, the latest version 3.4.1 requires manual download and install.

a) I cannot find it in the OpenSuse repos for 15.5
b) Do you know of a trustworthy provider of the package? (With a simple installation procedure, that doesn’t need a lot of additional prerequisites, including my own knowledge!)
c) Is there a good (linux) alternative for OCR ?

@hnimmo You need to download from https://build.opensuse.org/projects/home:malcolmlewis:TESTING/packages/gimagereader/repositories/15.5/binaries once logged into the openSUSE Build Service.
