gfxboot file --- kroete.dat

does anyone know what kroete.dat file in the gfxboot package is used for?

i’m trying to design my own grub boot screen and menu and that file is an unknown factor in my research

no info on the web

mandriva calls it star.dat

is it a graphic of some sort?

thanks in advance

I think it’s the SuSE chamaeleon picture. “Kröte” is German for “toad”,
and while the SuSE pet isn’t really a toad it’s close enough to be
suggestive.

for anyone that may be interested

i did some research and found that kroete.dat is a template for the animation that you see when you hit F8 at the first grub screen

pressing F8 causes the pixels on the screen to start moving in a maze pattern

the pattern happens to be in shape of the SuSE pet

the animation routine reads kroete.dat two bits at a time and then moves the video pixels in one of four directions depending on the value of those two bits

the effect is interesting

it works when you boot from the openSuSE NET install CD
