Let me just start by saying OpenSUSE is by far the nicest Linux distro I’ve come across. Very sleek. Ok, I have it installed on an IBM T40 with a Cisco Aironet wireless card. Everything is detected correctly in Yast. My wireless network is a WPA-PSK secured network. I tried setting up a connection with the network management wizard and it looked like everything was correct, but I can’t seem to connect to the internet. Any help please?

Do you have an IP address? Can you ping something by IP address? Can
you lookup IPs by DNs name? Post the output to the following:
/usr/sbin/iwconfig
ip addr sh
ip route sh
cat /etc/resolv.conf
Good luck.

Ok, here’s the outputs from those commands.
By the way, the ESSID shown in the output of iwconfig is not my network. For some reason, it’s trying to connect to another apartment network near me. This output was taken directly after I set up to connect to my network using Network Manager.

Good luck.

That’s the problem, I can’t.
Hi
What happens if you disable encryption etc on your AP for the moment,
if the SSID is hidden, then unhide it. If your using Gnome, then
right-click on the applet in the system tray and edit your connections
deleting the other AP and adding yours.
Else try using YaST and changing to tradition ifup/down method and
entering your data.
Also ensure your AP is on a different channel than the other one

With no security at all, I am able to connect. I changed channels and that didn’t do anything.
Hi
So is wpa_supplicant installed? I would try the traditional method and
see how that goes.

wpa_supplicant is installed. What’s the traditional method?
Hi
YaST-> Network Devices-> Network Setting on the Global Options tab and
Network Setup Method, then go back to the Overview tab and configure
your network interface.

I have the exactly same problem with the network manager in SUSE 11.0. There is no problem using the network manager of (K)Ubuntu 8.04 though. Toooo bad we cannot use SUSE 11.0.
I tried that and no joy. When I run ifup, it tells me it’s unable to get an IP.
Hi there. I just ran into a similar problem, the only difference was my SSID was hidden. I tried this and it worked -
Go to YaST > Network Devices > Network Settings > Global Options. There, uncheck “Enable iPv6”. Right underneath that, in DHCP Client Options, there is a box for “Request Broadcast Response.” Check that, click finish.
Open a terminal and su to root (enter su root, then it will prompt for a password), then run “ifdown (your wireless device)”, then “ifup (your wireless device)” It shouldn’t pull an IP at this point ("…backgrounding"). Now run “dhcpcd (your wireless device)”, wait a couple of seconds, then run “ifstatus (your wireless device)”. It should have an IP by now, and you should be connected to the net.
Hope this works for you!
Jay
Jay, you are the man. Perfect explanation.
Ok, I’ll try that. I’m reinstalling OpenSUSE right now, but I’ll try it after I’m done.
Well, this isn’t good. Everything installed fine. I get a bunch of updates, which then asks me to reboot, so I do, but now I can’t get OpenSUSE to come back up, I just get a blank screen with a blinking courser.
