Okay I’m not sure if this is the correct thread but.
I remember downloading 12.2 and trying to place it on USB using several of the USB live disk creators like linuxusblive cd creator. I would plug it into USB on the desktop and it would never work. The only thing that has worked has been going to opensuse 12.1
so because I may have to upgrade to 12.2 due to networking/sound issues would like to figure this out. I got a plain old kingston data traveller usb stick 16gb. I did read the forum posts on setting up the usb stick except, linux image writer thing doesn’t work.
and let me think…oh yea I don’t have a DVD drive on the desktop just USB.

What fails with imagewriter? It works for me. I have two ancient 8 GB USB sticks
that are essentially useless for data as they are two small. One is written with
the latest test version of openSUSE, and the other has a copy of the latest
SystemRescue CD. Both have worked on any box that can boot a USB disk.
Since imagewriter became available, I only write the final copy of openSUSE
releases to CD or DVD media. Now that the Live versions no longer fit on a CD, I
will likely only keep the NET install CD. Not all my systems can read DVDs.
I guess I can give imagewriter another go, I think the last time I tried it said it ran out of space, but I will give it another go. I’m gonna order another flash drive and try it.
I have two USB sticks Kingston Data Traveler G3 of 8 GB from which I cannot boot to a openSUSE 13.1 DVD image, nor to a live-CD image.
I have tried both the dd command and imagewriter on both of the 8GB sticks. No difference.
Using different USB slots made no difference.
Interestingly, my older Kingston Data Traveler 111 of 4 GB with an oS12.3 DVD image boots correctly.
To be noted: the model 111 was written (using dd) under openSUSE 12.2, both of the the G3’s were written under oS12.3
My system is about 4 yrs old and pre-UEFI.
My knowledge is insufficient for understanding this problem - fortunately, for me there is no pressing need for a solution.
I could try reproducing the problem on an older desktop and on a more recent laptop.
