Getting multimedia to work in OpenSuse 11.0

Hi everyone I have received a lot of help from this site so I thought I would give some (hopefully Useful) help.

Getting multimedia to work in OpenSuse 11.0
This seems to be one of the most asked questions about OpenSuse.
So it looks like lots of people need a little help.
This has worked for me on about 3 or 4 different PC’s I hope it helps.

So here we go:
This is for KDE users, Gnome users, Sorry you are on your own because I don’t Know how to help you.
I am going to assume you know a little about OpenSuse and how to use YaST to setup and work with your system.

After an installation of Suse 11.0 open YaST and add the repository for your video card – ATI or Nvidia.
(YaST > Software > Software Repositories, click Add).
(Import all keys when ask)

Next do a full Update of your system (YaST > Software > Online Update).
When it’s done…
Reboot the system if needed.

Then do the 1 click thing here:
Restricted Formats/11.0 - openSUSE-Community
(Import all keys when ask)

Next might come the conflict resolvability.
Click the “use replacement” and/or “with vendor change” options.
Normally these are the second options in the list.
Click “Ok – Try again”

Next you should see YaST <2>
Click “Accept” from Automatic changes,
Click “Continue”
You might be asked for the install disc so have it handy.
Set back and watch the installation.
Click “finish” — Almost Done!

Open YaST click on Software management
(YaST > Software > Software management,)
with the filter set to “@System
Insure that these are installed:

libdvdcss
w32codec-all
libxine1
libffmpeg0 “Probably not installed”

Change the filter setting to Packman Repository
And install anything that’s missing.

Next might come the conflict resolvability.
Click the “use replacement” and/or “with vendor change” options.
Normally these are the second options in the list.
Click “Ok – Try again”
Click “Accept”
Next you should see a dialog box
“install or remove more packages”
Click yes.

In YaST update Kaffeine from the Packman repository.
(right click and select update option)
Continue with automatic changes.

Install xine-ui if you want to using YaST in another session.

Remove any CD\DVD disc’s and exit then reboot your computer.

Start Kaffeine, It should do a self test … Click “OK”
At the next screen select all the installation options… Click “OK”
exit Kaffeine.

Ok things work differently depending on your KDE desktop… KDE3 or KDE4
KDE4 will not automatically mount an audio CD, KDE3 will.
So you got to do things differently based on your desktop.

Test #1 (audio CD)

KDE3:

Insert an audio CD, KDE3 will mount it and ask you what to do.
Select “open with Kaffeine”
Click “OK”
Set back and enjoy the tunes!!

KDE4:

Insert an audio CD, open Kaffeine select play audio CD
Click “OK”
Set back and enjoy the tunes!!

Test #2 (DVD Movies The whole Point Right?)

KDE3:

Insert a movie DVD, KDE3 will mount it and ask you what to do.
Select “open with Kaffeine”
Click “OK”
Set back and enjoy the Movie!!

KDE4:

Insert a movie DVD, open Kaffeine select play DVD
Click “OK”
Set back and enjoy the Movie!!

About KMix and 4 speakers:
Calibrating the mixer
For the Sound Blaster Live! (I know It’s an old Card)
But still seems to be used a lot!

Mixer calibratation can be a bit confusing. For the Sound Blaster Live!, there are seperate controls to control the level of the rear speakers. One is for stereo mode, the other for surround mode. Added to this, is that the master control only controls the front channels. The control called “surround” is for controlling the level of the rear speakers in surround mode, when using surround40 for example. The control called “wave surround” is for controlling the level of the rear speakers in stereo mode, and will contain a copy of the fronts.
