Getting Managed Switch Web Control to Work with Firewalld

I am trying to configure a managed switch using web control. I am connected to the switch by wired connection with fixed IP in subnet range of the switch default address.
If I open browser and go to the switch address the browser appears to take me to the login but no login screen appears. In the browser the site information after the ip address is greyed out but is shown as:-

169.254.135.247/web/device/legal.html?lang=0

I believe the problem may be the firewall. Running sudo systemctl status firewalld gives me “active (running)”

Sorry I cannot show my actual system as there is no connection to internet from the problem machine at present, only the wired connection to the switch.

Using Yast and opening the firewall configuration the zone is shown as internal which I believe has reasonable default configuration. What could be stopping my browser from proceeding. Could it be related to java and how should I resolve problem?

Hi
I have a Netgear ProSafe switch and a HP printer, no issues getting to either with firefox and firewall running from Leap 15.0, what browser are you using?

Stop the firewall and test, is it working? If not then browser (or java) issues.

Yes, more likely browser related IMHO. What is the switch model?

Hi Malcolm,
I have stopped firewalld but still no joy. OTOH the switch (HP 1910) works fine with windoze.
Any ideas?

Hi
Then likely the browser requirements. What are browser you using on windows, what are you using on openSUSE?

You might find changing the browser User Agent may be enough to make the switch happy.

You’re connecting to a web page.
If you can use the same browser and connect to any other web page on port 80 (standard unencrypted), then the problem is not with your browser.

Did you try an https connection instead?
Or, some other type of connection like SSH?

Hi
Telnet should work to it…

@OP, do a nmap scan on it to see what ports are open…

Check the browser requirements are met as per the HP910 user guide. It may well be a JavaScript issue. I’ve encountered similar quirks with old Linksys switches IIRC.

Hi Deano, it appears to be a problem with the latest (several?) firefox editions. I have tried changing the settings so that javascript can be used on input line but there is still a problem and no login page.

Switching to Chromium worked in that the login page appeared and allowed me to log in. Unfortunately I then had nothing but another greyed out line on the entry

169.254.135.247/wcn/frame/.x

Could this be referring to some Microsoft requirement?

Your login is re-directing to WCN (Windows Connect Now) which is a MSWindows implementation and may not be what you want. is this device more than just a managed switch? Is this also an Access Point? If you can post the make and model of the device, that might be helpful.
IMO you should read your device’s documentation to determine if there is another way to access the device (possibly SSH).

Hi
The OP did post this info, see #4 it’s a HP 1910, telnet and console access over serial (direct)…

The joy’s of a GUI world… (not  )

Hi Malcolm & Tsu,
Many thanks for all the helpful replies and sorry I was so slow to catch on. Never had these problems with Netgear but HP have always been M$ orientated in the past. Same with their printers although they get the point now.
I believe this web interface requires ActiveX and that is probably the cause of the problem. The firmware has been updated but device has long been superseded and my model discontinued. I shall just have to use windoze on this occasion and which does work. The web management control offers the full range of features so makes life easier!!!

There is a special cable to enable me to use serial port and telnet but this only has restricted use and I cannot find it anyhow.
Of course if I knew what I was doing, doubtless it could all be done from the command line but I am well out of my league here. FYI the HP manual has about the same number of pages as the Brexit proposal, well over 500 pages so doing anything for the first time takes a while.

Thanks again for the help once more.

Have you thought of using the IE browser that comes with WINE? I don’t even know if there are all the pieces that would be needed for you to connect to the HP, but you’ll be able to find out by trying it out. That way, you won’t have to go off to Win* to do this chore.
