Getting android MTP to work with openSUSE 12.3 KDE 64bit

okay so recently I got myself a Asus Memo pad 7, a low end but decent tablet to do work on the side.
but I have an issue, I cant get it to connect to openSUSE.
In Ubuntu I can, in windows 7 I can, openSUSE?
Nope
I have tried this guide:

https://forums.opensuse.org/blogs/caf4926/using-android-mtp-device-nexus-7-kde-opensuse-12-3-128/

installed everything it suggested and no dice.

Any other ways to possibly get it to work?

Connect the device, immediately after that post output of

dmesg | tail -20
su -c 'tail -20 /var/log/messages'

Some devices have been reported to trigger usb_modeswitching, i.e. they do connect, but on connection the USB mode is switched. To disable, replace

# Disable automatic mode switching globally (e.g. to access the original
# install storage)

**DisableSwitching=0**

by

# Disable automatic mode switching globally (e.g. to access the original
# install storage)

**DisableSwitching=1**

If this doesn’t bring the result hoped for, revert the change.

here are my results for dmesg | tail -20 su -c ‘tail -20 /var/log/messages’:

So yes my device is being detected by openSUSE, I just cant write anything to it using opeSUSE

will try the other commands.

aand an update killed it.

Argleflargleblargle.

Well that was worth a shot I guess, but I am liking this triple boopt thinng and might give another distro a shot until openSUSE 13.1 comes out.
Manjaro has a new gui installer might give that a shot never tried arch before.

Oddly enough I followed that guide and with the KDE version on our laptop it failed despite a promising start. But now I’m running the Gnome edition on my desktop and it’s absolutely fine. No hiccups, I can copy files back and forth without issue, and I didn’t have to install anything extra. Confused? Me too! But I’m glad it works.

I think the problem is I followed the guide originally, when actually it was probably fine straight out of the box. It’s the only difference between these two installs I have anyway.

Yeah with this I sadly cant use openSUSE on a regular basis.
Hopefully MTP support will be better for 13.1.
Dont see why it shoulnt be as Ubuntu 13.04 has out of the box MTP support, and I can imagine openSUSE will catch up in that area soon.
Dont worry folks I wont ever fully give openSUSE up, I will try again next release
Besides by that time the new Ubuntu will be out and seeing that 13.04 is actually very good I bet 13.10 will suck (knowing ubuntus pattern of good release/bad release)
so it will give me an excuse most likely to try 13.1 out.

I couldn’t either. It detects the device very fast but when I try to copy files it says “mtp dies unexpectedly” after a minute of trying. I have followed that tutorial and installed all the tools in it.

My device is Google Nexus 10 from samsung.

Yeah its a weakness in openSUSE 12.3

I hope that it will get better for 13.1

Yep, it’s bad in 12.3. I installed Turbo Client for ssh (client) on my phone
and xferred using that (assumes you have WiFi pretty much).

Yeah i have wifi, but using that seems un needed really if i can directly connect using USB in ubuntu.
Like I said I am sure things will improve on openSUSE, its got half of it right now its a matter of waiting.

Hi
Waiting for…? the request to post the information from dmesg, a bug?

I have an ASUS TF101 working fine with jmtpfs, what are the device ID’s.

If you just want to chat, then head over to those forums, these are the
help forums, else I will be happy to move the thread.

Huh?
I actually didnt come across jmtpfs during my search actually, maybe i will fire up virtualbox here soon

Nexus 7 working fine in openSUSE 12.3 kde and gnome

But the inconsistency is in the devices. If only they would develop these devices with one universal standard…

Well I dont have a nexus 7, its an Asus Memo pad 7

https://www.asus.com/Tablets_Mobile/ASUS_MeMO_Pad/

Its a low end entry level tablet, I probably would have got the nexus 7 if i had more money, but my tablet does a decent enough job despite asus cutting a few corners with it (no bluetooth in it for example)

Okay I had to install openSUSE on my actual machine as it seems that MTP over vitrualbox is poop.
So I installed all the packages listed here:
android-tools
kio_mtp
libesmtp
mtpfs
libmtp9

AND jmptfs and nothing, still the error of “mtp protocol died unexpectedly” is prevalent.
Same version of openSUSE, same DE listed in the topic, still 64bit…
and nothing, it just doesnt work with my device methinks.
Ubuntu picks it up, both Ubuntu 13.04 and 12.04 after installing some packages there.
There is no reason why this should not be working.
but no openSUSE 12.3 just doenst want to work with device.
Again I think maybe its 12.3 that is at fault here, as when I tried Manjaro it worked there too.
So this isnt a ubuntu only success, I mean it doesnt work with debian but thats understandable.
I have not tried fedora with it yet, nor mageia.
I may but signs say it wont work there either.
