Hi, I’ve just installed OpenSuse 11.2 64-bit and, on the whole, I’m pretty happy with it. I’m connected to the network and I am posting this from my new system. However I cannot get any software updates or install new packages and I can’t see where I’m going wrong.
I’m behind a (non-authenticated) proxy and, obviously, Firefox has no problem.
If I use Online Updater I just get error messages like this:
PackageKit Error repo-not-available: Failed to download ./repodata/primary.xml.gz from Index of /update/11.2
(but the site is available in Firefox).
I have tried manual updates through Yast (after setting the proxy) and get pretty much the same thing.
So far I have set the proxy in:
Firefox
/etc/sysconfig/proxy
/etc/PackageKit/PackageKit.conf
Computer -> Yast -> Network Services -> Proxy (That has a test function which confirms it is working).
Applications -> System Settings -> Network Settings (This tells me that the network settings are controlled by NetworkManager and can’t be modified by Yast).
Applications -> System -> Desktop Applet -> Network Manager (This doesn’t seem to have any connections defined. I tried creating one but it didn’t make any obvious difference).
Nothing seems to make any difference - how many more places are there to set a proxy?
I’m using DHCP, IPv4, no IPv6, wired not wireless and I’m getting very frustrated.
Is that proxy filtering? Can you actually fetch the file repodata/primary.xml.gz with Firefox? Just wondering if the proxy denies you certain file types.

Well I’ve solved it but I’m not quite sure how. I got HTTP opened up through the firewall and disabled the Proxy in Yast. Then I ran Manual Online Update which worked.
Then I disabled HTTP on the firewall, re-enabled the System Proxy and everything works!
