sorry, i’ve not used Gnome3 so these questions might be funny, or
stupid…but, are there not a lot of themes default installed that you
can switch between using the menu’s configure desktop?

or easily available via YaST?

if not, then to have a root powered file manager you should be able to
look in the main menu > system > file managers > and pick something like
“file manager super user mode”

if that trail doesn’t exist in Gnome3 try:

hold down Alt, press F2, a run command blank should pop up, in it type

gnomesu nautilus

and, give your root password when asked

alternatively you can pop open a terminal and give the same ‘gnomesu
nautilus’ at the command line…

I have never used nautilus as root, but I think you should add
–no-desktop. You do not want to have a desktop overlayed on your own, and
belonging to Mr Root.

hmmmm…i used Gnome about five years ago, but --no-desktop must be a
Gnome3 ‘thing’ as i’ve never run it, ever…but, it sure sounds like
a good idea to run:

gnomesu 'nautilus --no-desktop'

if the super user powered trick is not in the menu system (is there a
menu??)

It is there for a long time, mainly to make it possible to run nautilus as a
file browser in other desktop environments without side effects (nautilus
should not take over the desktop when you run it in xfce, lxde, fluxbox
…). Though I do not know if the switch is needed when running it in gnome
itself (but it sounds really like a good idea when running it as root).

I did not know it either, or I forgot, but it is an old thing. I learned
about it in a post from martin_helm.

There is not that many good looking themes by default. But I found a page where they showed how to get personalised themes. Only problem is that what they suggest to do isn’t possible as I don’t can’t go into the file manager as root. Install Themes In GNOME 3 (GTK3 / Mutter / Metacity Themes) ~ Web Upd8: Ubuntu / Linux blog

gnomesu nautilus

This command doesn’t excist in gnome 3 apperantly. I always get an error when trying it.

And problem is, I am not that familiar with commands in terminal. I usually just follows How-To’s. And it’s more difficult for me in OpenSuse as I just transferred from LM.

what is more important to you: a working system or a different theme?

i would suggest you live with the theme you have until you have read
enough openSUSE documentation, wiki and posts to learn how to launch a
root powered file manager; know that you can’t use “sudo apt-get”; know
that instructions for Fedora are unlikely to result in a smile…

doing otherwise i’m pretty sure you will be back asking how to get back
to your now working system…

btw, it is “openSUSE” and what is a LM?

you can also type

su - -c nautilus

but as I see you do not need to be root just to install a gnome3 theme.
There is a package which allows you to install themes as normal user, a much
more clean solution for you I think.

The package is gnome-shell-extension-user-theme, search for it in yast.

Deffinately a working system.

I justed wanted to check out how to personalize it a bit more.
But I’m happy to leave it as it is. I am one of those who acctually love Gnome 3.:stuck_out_tongue:

Ok, sorry, openSUSE.
LM = Linux Mint.

Hi
Yikes!, there is a gnome shell extension for themes, no need to be in
the system bowels. What version on Gnome-Shell are you running?

Use YaST software management to install gnome-shell-extension-user-theme

zypper in gnome-shell-extension-user-theme
