Get printer ready to print

  1. I need help with getting this printer working.

  2. I am getting software updates, it says “Getting distribution upgrade information.”

The progress bar is not moving, so I will have to kill the process.

This isn’t the firtst time you are told:

  1. to tell always what version of openSUSE you use and to provide more information about which desktop you use when there is a tiny chance it matters;
  2. to copy/paste computer text between CODE tags in a post here (gettinng the CODE tags by clicking on the # bar in the tool bar), preferable inclusing prompt -command - output - next prompt.

For me it is also the last time I tell you this.

Further to Henk’s advice (which may assist with getting accurate advice), it is not clear from your opening post about what you are trying to do , or where you are stuck. The output you supplied is not enough to go by.

Hhave you searched for Canon Linux drivers yet? Many of the Canon printer models require proprietary software.

Canon Download Centre - Drivers, Software and Manual Downloads - Canon Europe

I note that there is a MG2200-series driver available (RPM package)

PIXMA MG2250

Once you have installed the driver, you need to configure via YaST (or the CUPS web interface if you prefer).

openSUSE-12.3-KDE-Live-x86_64

Drivers were installed in Windows long ago and printer works fine in Windows.

Regarding code tags and versions, I forget sometimes or make mistakes.

I could use more details on “configuring via YaST (or the CUPS web interface if you prefer).”

I feel that this response was uncalled for.

I post in other Linux groups and others CHEERFULLY help me.

No one is perfect and people come her for help.

Andy

Here is a pic of where I am at now.

Andy

That URL is showing private so can’t see it

We need to know some details to help you. There may be difference between versions and we ask that code be but between code tags so it does not get reformatted and hard to read.

Thnaks

What information do you need ?

I installed drivers and the printer is recognized now.

Okay, thanks.

I could use more details on “configuring via YaST (or the CUPS web interface if you prefer).”

So, I assume you installed the Canon driver without issue? Unfortunately, your photo is not accessible.

First, make sure you are a member of the ‘lp’ group for (USB-attached printer access).
YaST >> Security and Users >> User and Group Management
Here you can ‘edit’ the relevant user and make them a member of the ‘lp’ group if necessary.

Use your favourite browser and navigate to

http://localhost:631/admin

I generally prefer to add printers manually via ‘Add Printer’ (You will be asked for your root authentication during this process.) You should see your locally-attached printer listed. Follow the prompts given. Once you select ‘Canon’ for make, you should find the appropriate model listed. Select it, and ‘Add Printer’. Once you have completed the requested steps, you should be able to perform a CUPS test print. Let us know how you get on.

It might be a good idea for you to verify what driver packages you have installed.

rpm -qa|grep cnij

You’ll need to make sure that you have both the ‘cnijfilter-common’ and ‘cnijfilter-mg2200series’ packages installed.

If all is well, then proceed on to configuring via CUPS…

I have icons on the desktop for regular konsole and the superuser konsole.

A little confusing in that they start in different directories and the names used for the directories are a bit obfuscated.

It took a while to get used to case sensitivity, windows doesn’t care, you can type either Dumb or dumb.

You’ll learn. Yes, Linux/Unix is a little more rigorous, and the shell is far more powerful.

Open a terminal and become root with

su -

then

rpm -qa|grep cnij

Post the output here. Please wrap the output within

[/CO...] tags.
rpm -qa|grep cnij

cnijfilter-common-3.80-1.x86_64

You’re missing

cnijfilter-mg2200series-3.80-1.x86_64

Install of cnijfilter-mg2200series-3.80-1.x86_64

Package dependency could not be found.

Nothing provides libtiff.so.3()(64 bit) needed by cnijfilter-mg2200series-3.80-1.x86_64.

Yes, you’ll need to install libtiff3 (an older version of the libtiff5 package you already have installed). Get it from here:

software.opensuse.org: Install package graphics / libtiff3

IIRC, some older drivers require libtiff3-32bit, so you can get that from here:

http://software.opensuse.org/package/libtiff3-32bit

I will work on it some more tomorrow. Very tired.

I sure hope the scanner driver installation is more straight forward.

Hang in there Andy. You’re making progress and no doubt learning lots. It is easier to use the package manager to install RPM files like these. Navigate to the file with Dolphin (assuming KDE), right-click on the file, and you’ll see that you can select ‘Open with’ >> ‘Install/Remove Software’. It will then find and install any dependant packages for you.

Alternatively, you should be able to install ‘libpango-1_0-0’ with

zypper in libpango-1_0-0

then try installing the printer driver package again.

BTW, /usr/lib64/libpng12.so.0 (which is part of the libpng12-0 package) can dealt with via

zypper in libpng12-0

I sure hope the scanner driver installation is more straight forward.

Andy

Over time, I have installed a number of HP, Brother, Epson, and Canon drivers. Canon drivers are probably the least friendly (and least well documented) to install. Even though I’ve never owned a Canon printer, I’ve assisted several users with the driver installation, often by installing the drivers myself first, so that the installation steps can be verified.

Don’t worry too much about the scanner driver installation. I’m sure you’ll find that relatively straightforward.
