Hi,
There are numerous fs checks with transaction log replay at every boot of my opensuse 11.4 notebook.
I do not see any error messages on the console during shutdown or startup (but maybe I am just reading too slow).
/var/log/messages contains some error messages from NetworkManager during shutdown, but I think they are unrelated.
Filesystems I use are ext4 for /boot, ntfs for windows partitions, reiserfs for the root filesystem and for several logical volumes.
As far as I could see the checks are only done on the reiserfs filesystems on the logical volumes but I cannot see any warnings during volume group activation, so it seems the logical volumes are deactivated at shutdown.
Of course I do wait until the notebook powers off by itself on shutdown.
I’ll provide /var/log/messages of a shutdown/boot shortly.
Any ideas how to tackle this?

It is normal for reiserfs to do a fast check on every boot. Nothing wrong.

The short check is normal.
But not that the check says “NOT clean” and then does thousands of transaction log replays.

I see.
There is a bug affecting some people with 11.4 that on system close not all
filesystems are closed properly. I have pointed people having that to an
old similar bug for some ideas, and if confirmed, to report the new issue
on another bugzilla, but none have commented back.
The issue will never be solved till somebody having this problem reports
with good info in bugzilla.
In this report:
Bug 626580 - Failure to unmount the / partition
you can find an idea on how to debug the problem and report. It needs
editing the halt script for printing info and pausing for some seconds so
that you can take a photo with a camera. It is impossible to write anything
to a file at that point.

If you do a bugzilla, please post the number here.

No, that is not the problem.
On the normal sequence of things, when you halt the computer, all
partitions are synced and safely umounted, then power off. The problem is
that this is not happening for some reason for some people, and as a result
on all boots the filesystems are checked.
There is nothing you can do by doing a manual check to avoid this situation.

There already is a bugzilla since nearly 1 month. Status is still new. Hmm
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=679671
Ok, I think I understand.
IMHO, your Reiserfs filesystems can’t keep up with the cpu. Looks like you have a multi-core cpu.
Reiserfs was good for processing systems with large numbers of small files way back when but today, especially with Ext4, those small files are bundled into larger extents to save space and processing.
Bottom line there’s no advantage to running a Reiserfs filesystem, I’m not sure its even being maintained and your persistent boot errors suggest the same.
IMHO, convert your Reiserfs to Ext4 and you’ll be happier.
I converted a Reiserfs partition to ext4 after I upgraded a system to 11.2 using the conversion for openSUSE from https://ext4.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Ext4_Howto

I use reiserfs for a very long time - including with multiple cores. Never had a problem with it.
Not even with the same hardware before I upgraded from 11.3 to 11.4
Always fast and reliable and easy to maintain (–rebuild-tree saved me more than once after raid controller breakage, online shrink saved hours of time, …)
Manual unmount…reboot…mount cycles work just fine.
What I am trying to say: I don’t want to switch the filesystem until I know what’s going on when in the end it may be just some distros broken init scripts.
Yeah, I have stuff that worked 10.3, 11.1, 11.2 and didn’t work after an upgrade either. Comes with the upgrades.

Ah, then you have to add yourself to the report. They get more attention if
more people are affected.
You can also ping them in one of the maillists where the devs are >;-)

That’s not the problem. You are not understanding.

I had already added me to cc, offered support and gave the max votes I was allowed
In the old bug report I found a hint that parallel processing of init scripts could trigger this.
As a workaround I switched it off. Et voila: clean shutdown
So my suspicion about broken init scripts seems to be right, but I am not going to debug init script dependency hell…

I get the same problem on reiser filesystems - don’t have any others to compare.
This occurs with 11.4 / KDE 6.0. It does not occur with 10.3 / KDE 3.5.
THE PROBLEM DEPENDS ON THE DISPLAY MANAGER!
It only occurs when running kdm. If I use gdm or xdm, the problem is gone!
Also, with kdm, if you force an unmount with Alt-Sysrq-u before shutting
down, there is no problem.

I hope you reported this on the bugzilla.
