Three times [sigh] I had installed successfully the open suse 11.1 on my very slow netbook eCafe E-800 H20G/S that took three hours each time. Every time I ended up in a black screen with command line:
volkey@linux-fjmv:~> (with a cursor blinking)
But I am not familiar with handling such things from a command line. Would be much better to know, how I could having appear a desktop with icons . . .
The fact that you have a terminal login means that the installation was successful.
All you have to do now ist configure the xserver.
Login as root and type: sax2.
Unless you have a strange display card, it should allow you to configure x.
When you are satisfied, exit yast and start the xserver either by typing startx (not the best, since you are still logged in as root) or better, by typing init 5.
Either way you will get a window-manager desktop.

wow…if it takes 3 hours to install (and i’ve never heard of your
machine before) i have to ask if your machine meets the MINIMUM
hardware requirements for openSUSE 11.1? see here: http://en.opensuse.org/Sysreqs
second, are you trying to install from a DVD (or CD) which you burned
to a disk after downloading from http://software.opensuse.org/or
did the disk come from another source??
but, in either case: did you md5sum check the downloaded .iso PRIOR to
burning the disk, and THEN check the disk itself PRIOR to trying to
install? see hints on that and many other things in the thread of MANY
posts which begins at: http://tinyurl.com/6jwtg9
then: if your machine meets the minimum requirements AND you are
certain that the install media is PERFECT, then the problem is
likely with your graphics chip…if that is the problem you can find
many instances of success within the hits turned up from: http://tinyurl.com/mm5pxf
if you run into more trouble, come back and post again…
oh, and tell me: did you try running an openSUSE Live CD to see if it
was compatible with your hardware?
Hi, thanks, I am sorry, this eCafe has only 498 Megahertz.
DVD was from opensuse org torrentdownload image burnt under windows with nero.
I see now, how it works. But it will be too difficult for me. Before the eCafe had a pre-installed mandriva Linux. This either had grave problems.
I am not skilled enough for these Linux systems.
So I will have to install Windows again, that one time worked (slowly) on the netbook. :shame:
Sincerely, ve

wow, it was born with Mandriva and you took it off for XP…that is
too bad…a real shame…too bad you didn’t have the patience to just
learn to use what it came with it…
well, BE SURE to buy a really good virus, worm, trojan, malware
defense!! and, with Win7 very near you need to pray that MS continues
with security patches for XP…
