Get ATI Radeon X1650 (Pro) 3D working

Hello,
So I installed opensuse 11.1.

I used the 1-klick ati graphics driver installer, but 3D still won’t work. What else can I try?

DrNo

I’ve failed to get my ATI X850 XT or Pro working with the ATI Drivers and 3D since my 11.1 upgrade on release day. I’ve been closely following any developments that might suggest a solution so I can restore Compiz-Fusion 3d effects I find useful for productivity enhancement. After 2 1/2 months, I’ve resigned myself to the open source driver and KDE 4.2 to get most of the desktop effects I was using with Compiz-Fusion before.

9.1 & 9.2 just don’t seem to work with our generation of cards. I’ve tried 1-Clicks til I am silly. Every variation of ’ The Hard Way ’ I’ve found anywhere. Clean installations of 11.1 with all the dependancies. I’ve never seen the ATI driver actually loaded on any of my machines. I think some people might have gotten it working on 64 bit or laptops.

I’ve had best results using the old open source Radeon driver and just configuring via sax2 -r -m 0=radeon ===> Mesa loads instead of ATI and driver doesn’t seem to have the same troubles. As far as I can tell, I’m getting 3d to the extent supported by KDE.

I’ve be thrilled to see any write-up of a successful 32 bit AGP install. But I can’t keep wasting 8 hour blocks of time reinstalling to get the same unsuccessful results. If you’ve tried and failed at generating and installing yourself, I’d suggest trying the open source drivers. Maybe they will at least be 'good enough ’ for you, too.

I got mine working. I have a radeon X1650. All you do is add the Suse 11.1 repository to your Yast, then download the x11-video-fglrxG01 and the kernel-pae, which upgrades your current kernel. After installing those, run sax2 -r as root, and configure the resolution as you like. Reboot, and there you go.
