Genymotion, unable to start Virtual Box.

Good day. Virtual Box is installed and running normally on my system tho. And how do i upload an attachment to this site?

When this is about Virtual Box, does this then not fit better in the Vurtualization sub-forums, where the Vitualization gurus lurk?

You can upload to https://susepaste.org/ and post the link here.
Take care, when you uplopad an image, do post the URL of the page (not the image) here using the Globe (Link) button (not the Insert Image button).

You will have to re-phrase your question.
Are you asking about shared folders between a HostOS and the Guest?
Are you asking how to display an image in your Forum post?
Are you trying to post a file with data in a Forum post?

Something else?

Good day, a LOG file but this is not the main problem.

Henk provide information about how to use susepaste to make the log file
available here.

On the base problem, it sounds like the log file will help us see what’s
going on - Genymotion (for those who don’t know) is a tool to run Android
in a virtual machine (it uses VirtualBox to provide the virtual
environment).

I’ve run it in the past and not had problems with it running, but it
would probably also be useful to know if you installed VirtualBox
separately or used the included VirtualBox that comes with Genymotion
(when I used it, I seem to recall they packaged it in the Genymotion
distribution, but that could have changed).

According to current Genymotion docs, you need to install Virtualbox separately.

OK - good to know. The other questions still remain, though, so we’ll
need the OP to follow up with specifically what they see when they try to
run it.

Please use Code-Tag for such output from command-line, it is the small # in the forums-editor.

And please alway post the whole output incl. the complete input-line.

According to what was posted,
It looks like there was a failure creating a usable Host-only network interface without specifying an exact reason.

You’ll have to read or post the log(s) for more info, says your logs are in the following location

***"/home/jojo/.config/VirtualBox/VBoxSVC.log" to "/tmp/genymotion-logs-tmp/***

I would guess that you may not be running your genymotion install with root permissions (or sudo), which would be required for this kind of configuration.

It looks like this is where things start to go wrong - can you create a
host-only interface in VirtualBox directly?

If you can, I wonder if Genymotion has a specific version of VirtualBox
they’re looking for. You may want to ask in their support venue if there
is a version requirement (if it’s not documented, I don’t recall if it is
or not). You may need to install VirtualBox 5.x, as it’s possible the
management interfaces used by vboxmanage have changed from 5.x to 6.x.

Just FYI, this came from the log file - there isn’t an input-line (or if
there was, it was ‘cat’). No need to include that when posting log file
contents.

Actually, that’s not true - it should not be run as root, and isn’t
necessary to.

Managing the VirtualBox interfaces works fine if you are a member of the
vboxusers group…

Which - actually, that could be another place to look here. Artivision -
check and make sure your users is in the vboxusers group - if you’re not,
that could also be why you can’t create the host-only interface.

Good day. I specified above that VirtualBox6 from Tumbleweed repositories is running fine. If you are not in Vboxers then Vbox doesn’t start at all with a message, nothing to do with managing interfaces. Then i don’t understand the notion of “host-only interface”, that i see is “new” and then “Windows” - “Linux” and others. Also wile Gmotion comes with its own libraries Vbox isn’t one of them, QT and GLES are for example.

There is another secondary problem as well: “virtualbox-guest-x11” asks me to remove “virtualbox”, then how will i use “virtualbox-guest-x11”?

I did note that you said that VB6 was working fine - but that may not
extend to managing the virtual network interfaces. I don’t run VB6 or
use Tumbleweed myself (I’m on Leap 15.0), so part of this is just based
on an educated knowledge of how VB works in general.

A host-only interface is a network interface that is shared between the
virtual machine and the host - no external access. From the log file, it
looks like Genymotion is trying to create one using the command-line
“vboxmanage” tool, and it’s failing. That may be down to the specific
versions.

The virtualbox-guest-x11 package is guest additions, as I recall - it’s
not supposed to be installed on the host. Installing it on a system
implies it’s a guest, and you can’t run VB in VB (nesting VirtualBox
isn’t supported and generally won’t work), so that’d be why it’s trying
to remove VirtualBox itself - it’s one or the other.

May not be true,
But it’s my understanding that root permissions are required to <create> an interface, once it’s created it can be used by non-root users.
If interfaces can be created by simply being a member of the vboxusers group, that’s a unique Vbox capability.

Just tried it, and I can on my system as a non-root user.

Well, Genymotion uses VBox on the backend.

This line suggest that vboxnetctl is missing. I searched and i don’t have it.

Looking at my VBox system here (5.24 IIRC, but definitely version 5), /
dev/vboxnetctl does exist here.

Are all the VirtualBox modules loaded on the system? There are kernel
modules that enable stuff like this, and AIUI, this one is provided by
one of those modules.

On my system, I have:

vboxpci
vboxnetadp
vboxnetflt
vboxdrv

Good day, is there a way to install them from repositories? Also the check command i remember from VB5 is:

sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv status

Now there isn’t such path.
