There’s some things I can’t figure out. The following settings gets a reset every time reboot or if the screensaver/logon screen gets activated and I have to login again.
Display Settings - I use an additional HDMI monitor - It just switches off then resets in Nvidia x server settings. So I have to re-enable the monitor and set it up again! However after screen lock the monitor stops working even if I reset the settings it just keeps indicating no input… So then I have to relog and that fixes it.
Virtual Desktops - Why doesn’t it remember which windows is on which desktop… It always just put everything in one desktop. Very annoying.
Audio Config - When I change input and output interfaces it always reverts back to default I guess. Not a big deal though…
Terminal Profiles - Resets the profile settings… Actually because I use Konsole with Yakuake. So I don’t think it’s kde related. But would be nice to know why it does this.
I just noticed a program called Kate, something to do with sessions… Will look into it perhaps it’ll work for my Nr2 problem not sure…
1 I guess you use a NVIDIA card and have the proprietary driver installed. So did you save the settings in the nvidia-settings?? Also the desktop as settings for multiple monitors that may override teh NVIDIA settings. Be sure to set thing there also Or instead.
2 Not sure about VD since there were many regressions from KDE4 Maybe try saving the current settings as an activity.
3 not sure what you mean here are you using pavucontrol??
4 Don’t know
Kate is an editor. that is all. Has nothing to do with sessions
I seem to recall some of those problems when Leap 42.1 first came out, but they were fixed in updates.
I’m thinking of problems with window placement on login. I’m not sure of that, though I think I tested it. I know it was bad at first. I restore from a save session, and my only restored windows are in the first desktop, so I don’t test that every day.
There were also konsole problems at first, which are mostly fixed now.
I’m not sure of the Nvidia problems with dual monitors. There might still be some open bugs on those.
Same problem here with the loss of multiple-monitor configuration during reboot. Dual monitor works fine when configured under systemsettings5, but is “lost” during a reboot. Of note, the changes made via systemsettings5 are correctly updated/saved to a randomized filename in the ~/.local/share/kscreen folder each time changes are made/applied via systemsettings5, but these settings/config-file appear to be ignored upon reboot. This seems to only occurs when using the newer KDE/Frameworks v5.21 from /repositories/KDE:/. Reverting to KDE/Frameworks v5.15 from the Leap distro repo at /distribution/leap/42.1/repo/oss/ allows for the correct persistence of the screen configuration across reboots.
Rough config info here is:
Leap 42.1
KDE Frameworks v5.21
KDE 16.04
QT5 v5.6
x11-video-nvidiaG03 v340.96-41.1
x11 v7.6
I’ve futzed with a manual xorg.conf and nvidia-settings, but with no success. The obvious fix is to ditch KDE/Plasma from the newer repos, but I don’t wanna. Google says this has been a problem for some time, with kscreen mentioned as being ignored/incomplete, having some tie-in to failure from using the nvidia proprietary driver. Yet it works just fine when using the Leap OSS repo version of KDE/Framework.
How to:
Fix/tweak this into working on a per machine/user basis, or,
Get the fix from distro pushed into the new distros? Any ideas welcome!
Shouldn’t the Nouveau driver be uninstalled? Not sure as it says the Kernal Driver in use is Nvidia, so it’s correct.
My multi monitor is setup perfectly in the Display Configuration and in Nvidia X Server Settings.
I did notice so far when I don’t use the auto lock screen setting then the HDMI settings doesn’t get reset and works great. So perhaps a bug with that lock screen option in KDE.
Will have to test other environments to see if it’s the same…
I think that uses the same driver as the Geforce 6150LE that I have on one of my boxes.
That driver doesn’t work well with Plasma 5, and doesn’t work at all with Gnome.
For Plasma 5, I set desktop effects (compositing) to use XRender. And that works pretty well, though not as well as on my main desktop with Intel graphics.
I at least got it to keep settings when I do restart, although when the HDMI monitor auto off (built-in, unable to switch off) I have to resetup the hdmi position and resolution. Just means it’s time for a new one. :sarcastic:
I would like to know if it’s possible for Plasma 5 to remember the windows/programs opened on the different virtual desktops?
Perhaps that’s not even a feature? I’ve got chrome, photoshop, gedit and a few other things on autostart… Or is mine broken?
The way I use it, I have configured the desktop to “restore manually saved session”. Then I set up my session to how I like it. After that, I did a “Save session”. And that seems to be working well, though I save only a fairly basic setup.
In the past, Wolfi has suggested people try this, and manually save their session just before shutting down. Apparently there is, or was, something broken when shutdown tries to record the information about the windows that are open – some sort of timing problem where the window is closed too soon before the details are saved. So maybe give that a try.
