general problems

Hi I have just installed opensuse and I must say a I am very impressed with the kde desktop anyway I am having some issues firstly I have a toshiba sattelite A120 laptop with an ati radeon xpress 200M. my problems are

I don’t think plasma apps are saving settings properly as the kde display manager reverts to disabled on the resulution every time I log and windows have to be enlarged every time I log in however YAst has the correct res setting (1280x800) but the screen is black until I press alt f2 and configure the display settings through the kde display manager then everything is fine.

after I upgraded from kde 4.1 to 4.3 I had to execute this command

kquitapp plasma-desktop && rm ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop* && plasma-desktop &

according to this guide KDE/Upgrade - openSUSE which now means I had a blank panel so I got back the menu and the desktops and the window switcher and the system tray but not all the other stuff it used to have because I can’t remember so could you please help me get this back.

wireless isn’t working and I am not sure how to configure it this could be possibly to do with the fact that I had it plugged into a network connection while it was detecting hardware

when execute plasma-desktop & I get this

[1] 4281
milo@linux-0za5:~> Invalid D-BUS interface name 'org.kde.plasma-desktop.PlasmaApp' found while parsing introspection

[1]+ Done plasma-desktop

and finally my graphics card hs been badly detected again for tyhe billionth time of any distro and my 3d accel is not working properly on gentoo when I was using opensource drivers because the proprietary no longer support my card I had to install the 999 versions of mesa xf86 ati driver and drm which in ebuild talk I think means that they were development versions and those worked fine with my card giving me 700 more fps and now I am once again stuck at 100 fps and kde desktop effects complains that my x config doesn’t alow it to use opengl so a fix for this wouold be GREATLY appreciated.

so those are the problems of the top of my head help with any of these would be useful

oh scrap that 2d accel appears to suck when using some apps Hedgewars and Phun - 2D physics sandbox - Home are the ones I have tested but my graphics card is able to render maninthedark.com by Miltos Manetas and Aaron Russ Clinger , 2004. and marble desktop globe so I am not sure whats going on how could I enable opengl in xorg.conf it would help my testing.

sorry forgot to post xorg.conf but here it is

hope that helps.

well by some sort of combination of pagen magic and good programing using fglrx works with my card on openSUSE 11.1 and it installed and configured seemingly without problems but I still can’t enable kde efectsts with opengl or use wireless but I am sure I can fix this.

For wireless problems have a look through these threads here -

Wireless - openSUSE Forums

The ones at the top marked as “sticky” are the ones to start on.

Wireless can be no fun at all under Linux, depending on what hardware you have.

Good luck :).

I have no firmware lines and my kernel driver is ath5k what should I do

Without trying to sound rude, I already set you on the correct course.

READ through those “stickies”, if you had you would have seen that it tells you how to identify your wireless adapter, and to post the relevant information here so someone has a better chance of helping you.

Also I did a simple search for ath5k on the forum (it’s quite easy, there’s a button top-rightish), and it returned a few possibilities -

AR242x wireless working (part 1) - openSUSE Forums

Atheros AR5007 on Opensuse 11 - openSUSE Forums

Another Atheros not working - openSUSE Forums

[Solution]Atheros AR242x - Suse11 - pae kernel - openSUSE Forums](http://forums.opensuse.org/network-internet/wireless/396325-solution-atheros-ar242x-suse11-pae-kernel.html)

That’s assuming that you have an atheros adapter, but without knowing which exact model it’s a bit of a guess.

I NOW HAVE WIRELESS EUREKA but windows still don’t start again at the same size for example I open a firefox window and it fills half the screen after I have closed it the next time it starts it needs resizing again it may sound like I am being picky but it realy is anoying what could cause this

Good to hear you got wireless working.

The size problem can be solved by right clicking on the menu bar of the window and selecting Advanced then Special Window settings, you can set it to remember the size/position, or to forget them.

In the desktop control panel, you can also set KDE to place the windows in different ways too, I prefer centred.
