Geforce 6150SE issues with Opensuse 11.3

I am working on my friend’s Compaq Presario SR5413WM with an integrated Geforce 6150SE gpu.

Issue 1: I cannot activate desktop effects. This message shows up when I attempt to. " Desktop effects are not supported on your current hardware / configuration. "
When I enable it my monitor becomes extremely distorted before it reverts back to original settings.
Under hardware information > Display > Geforce 6150SE the driver is listed as nouveau.

Issue 2: Flash video such as youtube videos are now unable to render. When playing a video it is also distorted and unwatchable.

Any pointers would help! >_<

Further to what caf4926 noted, the nouveau driver does not support “Desktop Effects”. Hence caf4926 has provided a link where you may be able to install the “nvidia” proprietary grahic driver, which is provided by nVidia.

When you say “are now unable” does that mean it worked before ?

Still, this should not happen even with the nouveau driver. Its possible, I suppose, it is a nouveau driver incompatibility with the GeForce 6150SE. And it may be something else. If you succeed in getting the nvidia proprietary graphic driver to work on this PC, advise if the problem still exists with flash.

Resolved the problems thanks to your/ guide!

I followed caf4926 and my friend’s computer can now render 3d graphics. After fixing that issue the youtube has no problem streaming videos. Thanks for the help oldpcu!

Glad to read following caf4926’s and my posts you had success.

The practical theory guide is a work in progress, and I also added a bit more to it this evening. Its getting a bit too long and ungainly, and I hope later this year (or early next) I can do a re-write, … but I need to increase my own knowledge a bit first.

You are welcome
