Geeko foundation non profit status

Hi.

I was trying to add the geeko foundation to my job donation platform and I couldn’t because it is not a non-profit. Does anyone knows the reason for that?

The weird part is they claim to be a non-profit on their website, and the company number 14662457 is not registered as a non-profit

We are reading this around the globe and wonder.

You may add in which jurisdiction you are trying to do this.

Hi, welcome

@pfitzgerald Could you enlighten @dnla about this?

I’m in the Netherlands, but I don’t think it matters. I can donate to non-profit worldwide.

Thus you mean as ANBI?

Hahaha, A fully dutch thread … Except for the NL subforums I never saw this happen in 20 years.

FWIW, geekos.org at the bottom has a reference to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Company_limited_by_guarantee .

Have you considered contacting the Geeko Foundation to find out? Seems that’s the appropriate follow-up (btw - it’s a UK organization formalized in UK):

[quoted from website]

  • How do I get involved?
We are working on a range of sponsorship methods, stay tuned!

  • How do I contact you?
Contact us at info (at) geekos.org.

I did email them, the email bounced with

Your message wasn’t delivered to info@geekos.org because the address couldn’t be found, or is unable to receive mail.

That’s why I started the thread.

I understand is registered in the UK, but as a company limited with guarantee, which is used by some non profits, but also by commercial entities, so that does not help.

I hoped to find them in https://register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/en/charity-search/-/results/search, to no avail.

I’m just trying understand the case of how it is a non-profit, it is easy to check for wikimedia foundation in US, or KDE in Germany, but I really don’t understand the UK system

@dnla FYI, I pinged Patrick

There are several possibilities for charities in the UK: see Steps to setting up a charity and different Model constitutions.

There is some background on wikipedia about this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Company_limited_by_guarantee#Not-for-profit_uses

It seems that Geekos is ready to take monetary donations on their site but not yet help with jobs / projects - which I think is what you are trying to do.
Hope this helps.

Hi, there may be some confusion here - the Geeko Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation, but not a charity. We intend to take that step soon, but the practical difference is only in the amount of tax deduction that the donor can claim. Otherwise it’s the same style of corporate set-up as a charity. I’m curious to know how you’d come to think otherwise?

As for the set info@, apologies, for that, I’ve fixed it - it goes directly to me now.

Any other questions feel free to ask, and any assistance IS very welcome.

Hope that clears things up - /p

Wow this is more complex than I thought. Thanks everyone for the useful information!

I will just keep a personal donation instead of through my employer, I hope it becomes clearer in the future, so adding geeko foundation as a non-profit becomes easier

Hi, we take donations both from corporates (Suse, Arm etc) and individuals (via the website, and directly at events - usually if you see an openSUSE stand you can make donations via card) and our contributions are mainly used for travel support and event sponsorship - FOSDEM, openSUSE Conferences (Europe, Asia and earlier this year, Americas), amongst others. We are open to ideas as to other ways that we can help (time and money allowing)… so please reach out if you have ideas! /p

(Also I’d like to add that we are only three people, all of us working full time in other roles, and none of us receiving payment for the work we do for the Geeko Foundation)
