gedit not starting under root

I want to edit my fstab. If I start gedit in a terminal window as user then fstab is opened read-only.

On the other hand, if I switch to root and try to start gedit then I get

** (gedit:6264): WARNING **: Could not connect to session bus

and gedit does not start. What would that be?

Greetings
HN

Use “gnomesu gedit” to start gedit as root.

Probably (you have not answered my question) you used “su”. That fails,
you have to use “su -”.

Yes, you are right. I switched user with ‘su’ and then entered gedit as root.
Now I have to understand what the difference is between ‘su’ and ‘su -’ :\

su keeps the user environment su - switches to a true root environment.
