GDM

How do you change the GDM theme? also how do i switch desktop environment. I installed both kde and gnome with the installer but at the login screen there is no sessions button :\

Someone correct me if I’m mistaken here, but I think I recall that there is no utility to change the theme of the new gdm as there was before (gdmsetup). It is probably some file tweaking now. I found this thread, it seems related to your problem: change gdm theme in opensuse 11.1 ? - openSUSE Forums

As for the desktops, I can’t help you there either; I installed both KDE and Gnome and have an option at the bottom of the screen to change the session at gdm.

So what am i going to do? My GDM is messed up… is there any other way to change sessions?

you could try installing some other desktop manager, like kdm. Or try uninstalling and reinstalling gdm, don’t know if that will help…

i tried reinstalling gdm it didn’t do anything

is there any other way to change the session? Through the shell maybe?

Hi
Either via YaST /etc/sysconfig editor or via the
CLI /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager for gdm
and /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager for kde, gnome etc.

broken in 11.2 can’t change back to kde!

sysconfig etc. all is ignored

This is true. GDM has been entirely rewritten from scratch. This version is not themeable anymore. Many other features (like login in a nested window) are simply gone. There is basically 0 customization possibility. It has 0 advantage over previous versions. The new GDM is a complete regression. The (I guess new) maintainers should have made a fork and not call it GDM anymore. IMHO simply removing all features from a so widely used program is not acceptable.

Hi
Not quite true, you have to manually tweak.

I didn’t say that you could not downgrade.

Hi
No downgrading, just tweaking

Oh, I see. That makes it a good candidate for a user repo.

In GDM you must first select a user; click the username, and more options will appear at the bottom of the screen, including DE.
