My pc was working find (OpenSuse, Kernel 2.6.37.6-0.7-desktop [same happens with Kernel 2.6.37.6-0.7] - Asus N53J [i7 - 740QM, 12GB]ram) -
just came back from a trip, and tried to boot the system and gdm fails to start -
it logs in failsafe mode - and the errors I can see when try to restart gdm is:
Failed to acquire org.gnome.DisplayManager
I tried the solution suggested in troubled boots but didn’t work -
is there a way to repair gdm?
would an update help (network manager is up, but is not connecting to the internet because is probably using the wrong configuration i.e. home, rather than work)?
just need to get the pc up and running
there is a problem with the use of nvidia drivers; in xorg.log I could see that the system was looking for the “radeon” driver; I had to remove all display related files, and remove nvidia - currently the system works fine with nouveau drivers

There is a known problem with gdm and nvidia, but it affects the beta
version 12.1.

following this thread (link) I did step 8 and now the pc is working fine with the nvidia drivers - I believe that there was a kernel update and I needed to re-install the nvidia drivers - if this is not a long term solution I will update the thread
