gdm crash after upgrade

After I upgrade my system today, I only get a partially initialized graphical screen.

Maybe related to this message in the journal:

JS ERROR: SyntaxError: missing ] after element list @ resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/messageTray:1045

You’ll need to provide details about your problem, any errors and possibly a screenshot (depends on what your error is).

If you <really> believe your problem is related to gdm, you can try force re-installing gdm

zypper in -f gdm

And perhaps verify that gdm is still your configured Display Manager and the correct Window Manager is specified. You can do this by looking /etc/sysconfig or open the Yast “/etc/sysconfig editor” module.

Actually, a screenshot is quite hard to make when you have no graphics lol!

A new batch of patches has arrived, which resolves the error I saw. Now, it gets a bit further. Still crashing but on

GLib: g_variant_new_string: assertion 'string != NULL' failed

I am not investigating that, until I succeed to install all packages. A new gnome-shell awaits a new package mutter-cutter, which is not yet available. Also no idea how to discover the source of that error.

forcing the install of gnome-shell, removing libmutter, helped. Problem resolved.

FYI - When there’s no graphics, that’s when you pull out your trusty camera (eg phone camera)…

If you install something like fbgrab, switch to a VT and login as root
user then run;


fbgrab -c 7 desktop_fail.png

Can even use susepaste (see the man page, lots of options etc) from the
command line to upload… :wink:

With the problems of the repository of the last few days, it may be incomplete
