I managed to forward X11 to my windows using Putty and Xming, works fine (tried xlock).
I’m now looking to forward gnome itself, hoping it’s the same principle that will apply, and I would like a few pointers for what to launch in Putty (gdm?), and if there’s any conf file to alter.
I have been looking around the gdm conf files, but I’m afraid to compromise security by changing random stuff.
On a side note, since my linux box runs headless, I’d like it to emit a beep or ping another machine when it’s ready for me to log into. Any idea how I can do that?

Try FreeNX. Far the best solution for remote full screen graphical
desktop sessions.
The server runs on Linux and there are clients for windows, too.
It’s been included in openSUSE at least till 11.0.
I made notes about installing it about a year and a half ago, I guess
it’s still pretty valid:
Thanks for the ideas, I’ll try FreeNX. But I’ll still keep putty around since that machine will be used to install oracle on it, the gui was just to help me during oracle installation.
