Hi everyone,
just wanted to introduce myself. I’m an artist/writer from Australia. I’ve been tinkering (distro-hopping like mad) for quite a while and have pretty much settled on openSUSE I think. I’m running it on my old laptop and am very impressed by its stability.
I’m a little concerned about the current YAST issues but hoping the bug gets fixed pronto.
I just finished building my new i5 machine and I’m installing SUSE as we speak. Though I’m going to have to reinstall as I just realised it’s the 32 bit version and I meant to use the 64. sigh
I hope to single boot, if I can get Warcraft performing well enough in WINE. I checked out some forums and people have reported excellent performance on a correctly configured installation so I’ll give it my best shot.
Everything else - web, mail, graphics, media - I find I can do to my satisfaction in Linux.
I’m going to be so pleased to give Microsoft the flick once and for all!
Community is quite important to me and I’m rather hoping that there’s enough ‘regulars’ on this forum to get a sense of that.
So, greetings and I hope to get to know y’all!
DotA runs well, even LAN games should work but sometimes it’s a bit unstable.
And… Welcome to openSUSE lol!
Good on yer mate. Show them who’s the master of your computer.
I’m trying hard to go nil boot. Then I can go on extended holiday. lol!
Unscrew the hard drives, use them as door stoppers.
Nil boot is the way to go!! lol!
Hello and welcome.
Good to hear you like openSUSE, good luck with Warcraft (I assume that’s
a game).
There are many regulars on the forums, so you should get the community
feel you’re looking for, also don’t forget the IRC channels and mailing
lists.
The openSUSE community is very friendly and helpful: I’ve always
received excellent help, very quickly, whenever I have had problems.

More openSUSE in Oz, that’s good news
Disconnect HDD’s, boot from this Live-CD. Not sure if that’s what you’re looking for, it’s a nil boot for me >:)lol!
@artemysia: Good, good, good
Wow thanks for the warm welcome everyone!
Well I’ll definitely spread the openSUSE word in Oz! Funny how I always thought Suse was a business distro, when its stability makes it perfectly good for any application, and I like the aesthetics too.
Yes Warcraft is a game - got it working pretty well actually. Not fantastic, but pretty good.
RichardET, didn’t go for i7 due to cost - the budget kept creeping up. A extra hundred bucks for the cpu itself and another hundred for the motherboard. And I just don’t need that much performance. The i5 flies compared to anything I’ve been using up till now.
I can upgrade later when I’ve got a bit more cash to splash. That’s one of the reasons I decided to build a desktop rather than getting a laptop.
