I am new to linux, so please be gentle with me. I am trying to install gcc 4.2.4 I specifcially need C++ 4.2.4 and gfortran 4.2.4. I successfully installed gcc 4.4.1 through yast. However, the software I am trying to compile will not compile with 4.4.1. After contacting the software support, they inform me that it will only compile with 4.2.4. So, I searched yast with no luck. I have found a .tar.bz2 on the internet. I attempted to configure and then build. I get the following error after running the make command.
configure: error: cannot find neither zip nor jar, cannot continue
I have gcc 4.4-4.2 from the standard repos. Isn’t that higher/better then what you want? Or do I understand you completely wrong?
But I have openSUSE 11.2 and you forgot to tell what you have and I have no crystal ball.

Sorry, I forgot the system info. I’m running openSUSE 11.2 64bit.
I did install the standard gcc4.4-4.2 repo. The software I am trying to compile with gcc requires gcc 4.2.4 and gfortran 4.2.4. It will not compile with the standard repo (I tried). Is there a way to force the standard repo to work in a 4.2.4 mode only?
And I have to appologize because the 11.2 was in your thread title!
I can not answer your question about an option. I hope that other more knowledgeble in this subject will join. It seems to be more a question for the Programming/scripting forum. But wait for a day until everybody around the world has got time to look at your thread
If it really only compiles with gcc 4.2.4, and only with that exact version… the problem is with the software you are trying to compile.
It could have a problem with the specific version of gcc 4.4.1, but not with anything higher than 4.2.4!! If there is a problem in gcc the authors of such software had a lot of time to report it, their fault. And if the problem is with the software (a problem that gcc could ignore 4.2.4) they should fix its software instead of asking users to downgrade gcc.
In fact it’s really difficult to me to believe they said such a thing. “Works for me with 4.2.4” ok, but “it will only compile with 4.2.4”?? Please!!! You can’t say such a thing to someone.
It seems gcc 4.1.2 and 4.3.4 are available in the repos, you can test with them. But what really needs to be done is to fix such a software, could you give a link to its homepage?
I am with RedDwarf. When software only compiles with a certan level and not with a higher one I suspect it to contain lousy coding.
In any case you could search at Software.openSUSE.org. I did a try with gcc and 11.2 and got 40 pages with all sorts of levels. You may spend some time looking through them or use a better search.
How does one get the ‘gcc compiler’ installed? I am trying to use a demo of PureBASIC and it requires the ‘gcc compiler’;
I searched the repositories in YaST for ‘gcc’, but so many listings came up, thus, I do not which one(s) to download, or even if what I need is even in the subscribed repositories.
