Funny thing happened on the way to sound...

Funny thing happened on the way to sound, it happens on Amarok, it shows it works on Yast Sound Test, but when I go to Firefox or Chromium, not one sound…Have the browsers been compromised so people can’t hear videos??? That is what it appears to me. I have tried all the multi-media upgrades, but still no sound on the browsers. So I am stumped to say the least and it is frustrating. I have the latest Adobe flash and last upgrade left.

Some questions:
openSUSE version?
Desktop environment?

To get a better handle on this, is it just sound playback when using a browser that is the issue here? Or a more general issue?

Do these commands both produce audible sound

aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav
paplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav

I assume you do have sound in other applications ?

If no sound no matter which application, then my post below does not apply.

But if you get sound in other applications, then it could be a couple of things, but my knowledge on the detailed sound implementation in openSUSE with KDE (which I assume you are using) is a bit weak.

Note that pulse audio provides the capability of volume control on an application level, which can be tuned with the application ‘pavucontrol’ (pulse audio volume control).

Its also possible that the applications with which you do not get sound are missing some underlying library or binary … possibly some specific gstreamer app or other application. Someone who knows better than I as to how this is integrated likely should chime in here.

Results of running the code
It does not work on the browsers, audio for Amarok works. So so I am not sure what the problem is.

this could be as simple as pulse audio volume control having 0% volume set for your browser. Try installing pulse audio volume control (pavucontrol) if not already done, then when playing something with your browser, launch pavucontrol and tune the audio levels in playback. There is some guidance here on pavucontrol : Pulseaudio Basics for openSUSE with pavucontrol - Open Chat - openSUSE Forums

It could also be the plugin and/or codecs for your browser not setup correctly - but one thing at a time.
