I have to enter my pw constantly on my SUSE 11.3 system when working with my web site. On my Windoze XP, I never have to enter my password after the first time, I stay logged into my website even after a complete shut down.
It must be something about Dolphin maybe which is my primary way to access my site. I use the “Network” portion of Dolphin and have an item called my-website-name which I set up to point to ftp://my-website-name@my-website-name:21/.
From a complete shut down, the first time I click my-website-name, I get an authorization dialog that is filled in, with “remember password” checked. If I click Login, it seems to fail at the bottom Dolphin says in red “Could not sign in”). Yet if I click again, the top level of my website comes up. Clicking on the folder I want, I get the authorization dialog again. If I don’t retype my password, it fails. It does not remember and it asks me for each new file or folder. I must retype my password. Ever time I write something new to a file, it wants me to retype the password. That part is pretty consistent. I am getting tired of the password dialog box. I’d like to use SUSE for the website work.
Sometimes KDE wallet comes up and wants a password and sometimes it does not…
Help? Maybe I am in the wrong forum for this if so, redirect me. I don’t even know what to search for on this. “Password Hell”?

i know a lot of folks use Dolphin for ftp, but i have not so i can’t
help…what i use is the add-on to firefox named FireFTP (version
1.99.5) which is pretty much drop dead simple to figure out (left pane
is ‘here’, right pane is ‘there’, highlight on left, click the > button
and it appears there also…fill in the password once, let KWallet
remember it…done!
if you don’t want that…ok…wait for a Dolphin guru . . .
So I upgraded to Firefox 3.6.17, the highest shown available in my YaST2, but still no joy on FireFTP, won’t install. On the Firefox web site, they offer 7.0.1 but it is a tar and I don’t know what to do with a tar. RPMs seem to install themselves.

We have 7.0.1 on YaST.

Probably the application forum.

do you have the update repo enabled and refreshed? if so i think it
should push ff 7.0 to you…and, if it is not enabled it might also
push LOTS of stuff…and, if you are using the machine on the net you
should accept all of the security updates, at least…
first: open YaST Software Repositories and make sure the 11.3 update
repo is enabled and refreshing…then, close that and then open YaST
Online Update, and i would expect it to show firefox as a needed
security update (and, maybe LOTs of other stuff if you have run Online
Update in a long while)
In YaST2 Online Update Congiguration I find that Automatic Online Update is OFF, so I turn it ON.
I open configured software repositories in YaST2 and I see that all are for 11.2. I am running 11.3 (I think) so I try to add a repository, I am given a long list headed Media Type and I pick community repository and I get “Warning: Unable to download list of repositories or no repositories defined”.
I thought this was all set up correctly and obviously it is not and I don’t know what I am doing…

That is not wise.

Do what DenverD suggested.

ok, so despite having named your host 11-3, you actually have 11.2
installed…which has past its end of life and no longer supported as
is with security patches, etc…
so, first you have to decide if you want to try the Evergreen
project…a best effort to keep end-of-products alive…read all about
it here (and you will know more than me because i have not read it all): http://tinyurl.com/4aflkpy
if you want to do that there is info on that page for a mail list where
(i guess) you get support…i can only give general help because i
never ran 11.2 (skipped from 10.3 to 11.3)
i’d think you probably want to either upgrade to 11.3 real soon or jump
to evergreen…
until you make that decision, we are done…except:
uname-a was a typo…should have been “uname -a” but i don’t need it now…
second, whatever you do if you wish to have a stable and secure system
you probably need to do some reading…like, one paragraph in one post
in one (very helpful) thread for folks who have not looked at the
documentation is the one which begins as “IMPORTANT!” in this post: http://tinyurl.com/33qc9vu, i note that either you never read that or
you forgot it as you set up your repos (as seen in the output above)…
i say we are done because i won’t help you keep a machine on the net
which has not received a security update since May 12th 2011 (cite: http://en.opensuse.org/Lifetime)… k?
Thank you. It is clear now and you assessed the situation perfectly. I have 11.4 ready on another machine here ready to go. It was a surprise to me also about the 11.2. Just waiting on a KVM switch so I can get to both easily and start moving email and web browser and documents over to the new machine. I don’t need to use the 11.2 much longer. I guess this is a solved thread.
I am operating now with both systems with the KVM switch at full resolution and no password hell. Switching to the 11.4 machine with all the latest software updates and switching to FireFTP has completely solved the sign in password issue.
Thanks all who helped.
I have one issue with audio with the 11.4 but I will search and then start a new thread. I think this thread is closed.
